I'm quite new to the woodsbuggy scene, and I have a quick tranny question. Everyome talks about 3rib, and 5 or 6 rib transmissions... My question is how do you tell the difference? is it the actual ribs around the outside of the tranny? Thanks for the info guys...

yep the top of a Bus trany has ribs .A 002 was the first irs trany in a bus they were 5.38 R/P or some 5.42 R/P they were 3 rib on top of trany case .then you have the 5 rib it was around 1974&75 it was a 4.86 R/P then the strongest was the 6 rib 4.56 R/P 6 ribs on top of case

3 Rib two distinct versions.
Later versions had an 002 part number, a bit stronger.


5 Rib or sometimes called a 002 pyramid tranny.


6 rib or 091 tranny.

Turbo blue is the three rib you are showing the later or earlier version? I have the other one and wish i would have got that one because of the extra mounting option.

That is the later version 3 rib. The early versions (2) did not have the mounting boss on the top.

figures i had both to choose from and picked the wrong one.

Hopefully you did not pick the 1968 model with the Acorn nuts around the CV shaft seals. This was the weakest of the 3.

Only difference is the acorn style uses side shims to set the pinion depth and the 2nd generation uses the screw in style aluminum bearing holders to adjust pinion depth.

Not sure about that one I must be gone too.

so is it a true statement to say that the more ribs, the stronger the tranny? Mine is a 3 rib, but I haven't looked up any numbers on it yet, but I have IRS, does that make adifference?

prolly get arguments but i have been told numerous times that a 3 and 5 rib are the same strength wise but geared differently and the 5 rib is a bastard transmission. the 6 rib is much stronger than the 3 or 5.

It is my understanding that the 5 rib is stronger than the 3 rib. Not so much the gear stacks but the ring and pinion. The 4.86 ring and pinion in the 5 rib is much stronger than the 5.37 in the 3 rib.

Yup, as long as the three rib is the later 002 version.
Gear stacks in the early versions were same as a sedan of the same vintage.
