I just finished building the new buggy and I have come across an issue I am hoping one of you has dealt with this before. Today I got the buggy out on the freeway and what I thought was just noise coming from the aluminum panels turned out to be somewhere in the drive train. The noise is always there and is the loudest when I am driving at 75 mph. It quiets down a bit under acceleration. It completely disappears when I push in the clutch. If I am driving at 75 and let off the throttle it will disappear for a half second and then turns into an almost whirring sound.
My best guess is that the empi 930 cv joints are not the greatest of quality and the sound from them under normal operation is being transferred through the transmission and into the frame. The transmission and engine are solid mounted to the frame. It is either the cv joints or the transmission is excessively loud, loud to the point where it is annoying as hell.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like a ring and pinion to me. Does it have aftermarket gears? I installed a Richmond ring and pinion before and there just noisy on slack throttle.

The gears and ring and pinion are stock and I do have some Weddle components in there. I just had it rebuilt and the guy who did it for me is one of, if not the best in Michigan. One thing I did notice that I had not noticed on other buggies I own is the amount of slop I have when I jack up the rear of the car and twist a wheel forward and back. The opposing wheel is very slow to respond to the action. If I were to guess I could twist one wheel 1/8 or even 1/6 of a turn before the opposing wheel responds. I will check that amount tomorrow to verify.

Sounds like it's in the tranny. If it were a cv I would think that it would make the noise even with the clutch in. I've got a three rib that's doing pretty much the exact same thing. Running in 3rd and 4th the faster I go the louder it whines. Just not got around to pulling it apart yet to see what it is. Chad

The only reason why I still considered the cv joints as a possible problem is because the only time I could get the noise to go away is when I removed any pressure to them by pushing in the clutch. The only other time the noise would go away is when I let off the throttle and for a half second it would go away.

Is there a way I can check the ring and pinion to see if it is operating correctly under driving conditions?

Goes into 3rd just fine. I think I am going to check the cups as well as a few other things tomorrow.

big70chev has had the same problem thru 2 or 3 trans. think he ended up mix and matching lobro and empi 930's to get rid of the slop....

cAN'T SEE THE VID BUT IT IS RARE, but right behind the cv flange the steel can shear off. But whatever it is tear in to it and let us know.

It looks like a bad CV, my empi's are now where near that bad.....
