first off id like to say hello and nice forum. im about to begin the hunt for a buggy i had one once before but i never got to ride it got aggravated and sold it because it was way to small. hears some info about me and the terrain i will be riding. first off I'm 6'4 400lb and my wife is 6'1 and a curvy lady. so we need a wide buggy but i really would like to have a shortish frame for ridding in the woods. im not into hill climbing just trails with lots of mud. what brand framed buggy should i keep a eye out for also what tranny should i look to be in it 3,5,6 rib or swing or irs. i really dont want to build one im tired of projects. thanks for any advice.

Welcome to the site.. As the the buggy, there are several frames that should work for you. I understand you would like to primarily trail ride but it would really help to know your budget.

I'm not really wanting to put more then 4000 in a buggy I know buying used i most likely won't find one perfect for me but as long as I can get one with a large frame decent tranny and i can do some riding i can work with that.

Hi Bob, first stay away from swing axles, IRS and a good 5 or 6 rib is the way to go. As far as chassis, your going to need to find something that can accommodate two big people, they are out there, finding the right one is the trick. Can you and or do you have the means to do some fabrication? That might be a necessity to get you guys to fit into a chassis that's close but not perfect. And where are you from, Might have someone down the road that can help you out?

I can do some fabbing if I got to I've just about got burnt out of projects with dirt bikes quads and especially my old k5 blazer woods ride. But I'm not afraid to break out the torches and Lincoln in something

I'd suggest getting a beater S-10 chevy or jeep and removing all glass except the windshield. Remove all doors and back hatch. Cut a round hole in the roof and install an electric radiator fan. Boom! you now have 4 wheel drive, 4 seats, heat , air, radio, pb and ps.

Done had that with the k5 I had to slow and rides to ruff have to have a tank to tow it to a riding spot then it costs a fortune in fuel to ride it all day. Just didn't like the whole experience with a off road 4x4. Never broke down even with 35" tractor tires on 10 bolt axles. Just was to big and slow

But for a big guy, if he lives next to the woods and there is no transportation needed, and low maintenance and price per pound of fun , he can't beat it. No disrespect to him, but 400 pounds getting in and out of a buggy!

No disrespect taken at all but getting in and out isn't a problem at all its finding the correct frame that is build wide enough for me to set comfy in with someone. I may weight 400lb but I'm not the usual big belly round guy. Just a large guy and broad threw the shoulders. The buggy I had was home made it looked nice but my dad is a small guy and he couldn't ride it it would have made a nice single seater

LA products in Akron oh sells a wide frame . They had a ready to go buggy with that frame it would have been perfect. Its gone now though. My Buddy is 6'2 300 and it was perfect for him and had room to move.get one of them and a used buggy and put the parts on it. Good luck.

Berrien Buggy sells a wider and taller Stalker chassis. IF you can get a hold of Beeline, they will also build a wider and taller chassis. I just don't see building a complete, from scratch buggy for under $4K, but that's just me.

I wouldn't mind buying a decent 3000-3500 dollar buggy and then swapping it all over to a new frame I should still come in under 5k doing that and that beats the heck out of 16000 for a 900 rzr or wildcat

Not sure if Jeff with Predator bug gyms still makes frames. He made a Grizzly frame that was a wide frame. Look at my pictures I have that frame.

I would look for a water cooled buggy with a 5 or 6 rib and then have frame made to fit you and the way you want. It may take some time and maybe a few more dollars but you will be happier in the long run.

My buddy just finish one of LA taller and wider 4 seat frames I'm 6'3" and that thing is enormous!
Larry's offroad sell knock down kits that can be had taller maybe wider if I remember correctly.

That looks like a good deal. However it looks like it's a 3 rib and you still have a carb and cast block. It will get you going and if your good with the carb its not bad at all. I think I would try to hold out for something fuel injected or a nice roller. But again I like that frame and it would be great for trail riding

I would look for something fuel injected with an aluminum motor. There is nothing wrong with starting out with a VW and then swapping over to something that has some real power A side shift 6 rib is the hot ticket as far as strength and should last for years as long as you don't pound on it too bad.
Lots of luck and your in a great spot to live as far as riding goes, reasonably close to some great riding.

I'm not looking for a great deal of power I'm sure a slightly modded bug motor would be OK with me to haul the wife on. I have other
Toys that will take care of the speed need. And I can do carbs pretty decent

Have you looked into that frame Yami450 has? That might be the ticket for something to start with.

Spend the time, get a new frame to fit YOU, make it the way you wants it. i bought a already built one and i do not think i would do it again. it seems to take longer to modify than build
