I used to be King Dingaling for supplying them. I learned they were great if you stuck with 33 or smaller tires but if you ever pull someone out of a mud hole you could expect them to last 2.5 rides later to break. I had a friend in the military that would round them up at junkyards and ebay in Europe especially England. Shipping is out of the question. $600 /trans. Military members can have things shipped cheap. I was in the Air Force and flew to Europe 3 or 4 times a year. I'd have up to 8 at a time in the cargo section of the aircraft. When I'd get back I'd have 542's 456's etc but the best trophies were 094 5 speed side shifts. They last about 6 years with extreme abuse. They have 483 and 486 ring gears with 411 first, 233 second and so on. Some had 4 spyder diffs. The last 3 rib nose shifts had 542's already in them (1979).1980 and up, 3 ribs were side shift on the nose. I'm retired now but those were some great days. Imagine rows of vanagons and busses with untouched trans. The junk yard man would lift them 6 feet in the air and he'd torch the trans mt's and cv shafts after I dropped the motor. They were $100/trans. In the back of the Air Force van were golf clubs , golf clubs, trans , golf clubs.lol Try www.ebay.co.uk |

The only 3 rib 002 with 5.42, I've seen was very near the end of the 3 rib production line, just a few months before the 5 rib came into production. They are just as strong as the 6 rib 5.42, but impossible to find. I have one, but it has all aftermarket weddle 1 thru 4 gears and is going into that 1 seater I bought from you Crambo, someday. |

Back in the day if the trans blew up the stealer uh dealer would replace it with a 542. 538's stopped in 1973 in the U.S. (jan of 74 I guess), but kept going around the world. Towards the late 70's the buses had 542 nose shift 3 ribs in the rest of the world. Our bigger motors and highway speeds called for different ratios and strenghths .542's work well but DON"T pull anyone. To my knowledge me and Busby installed the 1st one in Alabama in my buggy back in about 1994. The most my foot (gas pedal) ever got along with a 538 was about 2.5 rides.I had busted 538's stacked up like cord wood. But that was the good ole Go or Blo Chilton County days. I believe you need a new 091 pinion bearing and chromoly pinion nut to stretch their life expectancy, with locktite. A propane torch will loosen the locktite. Do not use threadlocker or it will never come off in case you have to go into it again.I always used the monkey snot gear dope so the gears would stay sticky while climbing and so gears can slow down enough to change without grinding. |

I new it was a long shot to find one, but it neve hurts to ask. It's actually for my granddad. we put a set of those 33 terminator atv tires on his buggy(they go like wild in the mud and soft stuff), he loves the tires but would like to gear back down...he's about 74 and likes to take it easy in the woods in his two seater....he save the bigger stuff for his one seater |
