Older bus engine like a Beetle engine or newer bus engine like a pancake style engine?

FYI, a VW bus had a Beetle style engine in it through 1971.

What size are you looking for? Type 1 or type 4? Stock or bored and stroked? Upright or pancake?

Yeah, earlier versions were single ports.

Stock type 4 motors are often very cheap....I had a friend give me 2 of them not too long ago. There are some issues with the stock type 4 motors that get expensive quick if you choose to address them. The main issues are carburetors, upright cooling, and exhaust. I run a type 4 and can discuss them with you or answer any questions you might have. I have two 2666, a 2500, and a 2800 (but only one of them is running right now).

If you are wanting an early bus motor, I'd recommend against that. As mentioned earlier, they are basically the same as a type 1 beetle motor but have most often been abused and forced to push around a heavy bus for its entire life. This makes it a poor choice for a motor to build and most would be completely worn out.
