I am looking for a well built homemade, single seat rail buggy frame with a short front end. I know that it sounds crazy, but where I live most trails are not wide enough for a large buggy, so my plan is to make a mini-chaindrive. I would prefer a frame that isn't really wide because I plan to narrow the front end. I have seen some awesome home-made frames over the years. There used to be a guy that built them near crick hills in western pa, he did a really good job, in fact my friend has one of these frames, it actually belonged to his great grand father.
If anybody has a decent frame let me know. Thanks, Ethan

I thought for sure someone would have a decent old frame behind the barn, or know of one in a farmers field.
I was hoping I could find one of these frames, without having to build one from scratch. Any leads in finding a frame would be great!
Thanks, Ethan

Ethan, I believe your being just a little too specific in your search. Most all buggys are designed to fit somewhat to the rear torsion housing, so the minimum width would be at the torsion housing. Then you need to add the trailing arms and tires. If your friend has a frame similar to what you want to use, your probably going to need to copy it. The width of the front end is going to be narrower than the width of the back end. What kind of trails are you riding? Quad trails? If they are jeep or 4x4 trails, a full width VW chassis works fine.

What kind of engine are you planning on using?

Mike, thanks for the reply.
The frame that my friend has, is narrower than the rear torsion housing, so I was thinking about using torsion eliminators, and actually narrowing the rear torsion, if I can find the right frame.
There are mostly quad trails where I live, some are a little wider, for a side by side.
I have a 2 seat vw powered buggy now, it is my 3rd buggy.

I was going to run something with a transaxle, I know that is a little vague, but I am still in the planning stage.
I have some extra vw parts, engines, transaxles, etc.
I had also thought about running a FWD engine and trans to a chain-drive setup.

I am still looking to buy a single seat frame of any kind, I'm willing to modify to fit my needs. If anyone has a decent frame let me know.

Dave, thanks for the links. The frame that I am looking for would be a copy of an early "Burro" buggy. Never thinking that I could use one, I have passed on a couple of these frames over the years, both single seaters. Both were very well built, 1 was $75, the other was going to be included in some other buggy stuff that I got for free! I wound up cutting the front end off of the free one. I am still kicking myself for not taking the whole frame!

Here is kinda what I am looking for, but a little better construction. At this point I would take a 2 seater, as long as its built out of quality tubing and the welds are good.

I just saw this buggy on samba, and thought I would share it. I think something along these lines would work. Like MadMike said I will probably have to build one from scratch. I thought that this old buggy was cool, and you guys might like to see it.
