OK just got home and will work on the video's and pictures. We had a BLAST. The band was GREAT. After the hill climb Darrell fixed a hill for a Tough Man Contest. Those who wanted to enter could. It was just for fun. Here is video where Clayton aka Hollywood flips his buggy. After he flips he climbs out before they turn the buggy right side up. He walks around trying to walk it off. He goes to the hospital later and that was the last we heard until today. Angela called on the way home to say that Bruce Sutherland came over and said Clayton ended up at UK going through surgery today for a broken neck. Even tough this flip doesn't look bad, it goes to show how easy something can go seriously wrong. Everyone keep him in their thoughts and prayer for a speedy recovery.

Does not look bad but it did bend his roof down about 8 inches to a foot. I talked to Gilbert (his son) on the phone, and he said he is in a lot of pain. It broke his neck in 2 places. How bad I do not know all the details they were about to take Clayton to surgery and I told him I would call back later to check on him. Just keep him in your prayers!!!!!

I would rather tumble off a hil than take one like that. Sudden stops are not good.

Yea, I've got some video to put up that shows it sitting there after the roll and shows how the top is bent down.

Doctors can do amazing things these days. I have screws and plates in my lower back and my friend has the same in his upper back and we both still buggy. Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.

Wes talked with Ruby (Clayton's wife) this morning and she said that Clayton came through the surgery alright. She said he is in a lot of pain and is having trouble swallowing. He says he's done with the buggy's. They say thanks for all the prayers.

Ruby called me about 1pm today, and said what they did was.. He had to have one vertebra replaced with what they call a cage, and one they just removed all the broke pieces. She said he will always have a stiff neck. She also told me thanks for all the thoughts and prayers.

As we were talking she said the roof of the buggy did cave down and hit the helmet. And if he would not have had it on it would have probably hurt him much worse.

I'm very glad to hear that clayton's surgery went okay. What really sucks is that Clayton had done climbed that hill about 3 or 4 times! And when we all seen it the flip didnt really look like it was that bad. I really hate to see Clayton get out of buggies again because him and the rest of his family are really great people to be around and to hang out with and it sucks that I won't get to see them as often now that hes out of buggies again! :( Im sure we will go down and visit them before too long though!
GET WELL SOON CLAYTON!!!

The amazing part is that was his 1st flip in 18 years of climbing. (That is what one of his close friends told me) Clayton does not trail ride he goes to climb the most extreme that any place has to offer. And he has climbed more straight up walls than anyone else out there. He has a talent that nobody else has it is just natural for him. He is one of the best and I hope he will be back because he is great to ride with. He has had many close calls, and this was not even a bad hill. It shows that anything can happen.

Maybe we should have a closer tech inspection. Is there anything that could have prevented this injury? Those with automatic trannys might consider some sort of pedal to activate neutral. Just wondering out loud. I hate to see any one hurt and wish Hollywood a speedy recovery. He is an inspiration to me and probably lots others.. Get well soon Hwood

I dont think it was the tranny that caught him, it free wheels backwards when he lets off the gas. Its got a pretty high stall converter. Even with a stock converter it would. Clayton said after years of climbing with a clutch , it was just an automatic reaction to reach for it with his left foot when he realized he wasnt gonna top out the hill. But what he stepped on was the brake pedal. Before he could lift it was too late.

Maybe it was too much weight for the .095 1 1/2" tubing. It seems to me a heavier wall (or using chromoly) for the w'shield bar and main hoop , or a taller roof, is all that could've prevented him from getting hurt. As far as the layout of the tubing and the angles and bracing, its a proven design on the roof/rollbars that has held up to many rollovers on regular single seaters. Its his design, which has been copied and used on MANY KY buggies, including mine. I smacked flat-ass on my roof like that, too, and it barely tweaked. I wasnt as high up, but only my roof hit the ground. A conventional buggy with lighter drivetrain, rear wheels, arms, etc. would've probably never have given up the windshield bar like that on that hit. Of course, he's never been over, always able to set 'em back down in time, so I'm sure he thought it was plenty strong to protect him. It was a very hard smack on the ground, too. Video doesnt let you feel the ground shake like it did when he hit.

Ruby said he was up and walking around a little bit today, but still in some major pain.

Get well soon, Clayton. With you down, it feels like our Superman is holding some Kryptonite.

Talked to Clayton today and he is doing Very good. He's been walking around quite a bit and the pain has let up a whole lot. He said the worst pain was from where they went in from the front to work on him and had to move his esophagus and all that over out of the way. Couldnt eat or drink for a few days.

He says he is NOT getting out of buggies. He tried once to quit but couldnt stay away. Its in his blood.

Says he's got plans to come back and be better and faster than ever as soon as his doctor's say he can work again! 8)

( And he's gonna move his brake pedal so he don't mash his brakes on when he goes for the "clutch" any more! )

I heard that that might just be a 2920 VW again!!! I do know he has bought the parts for one just before the flip. Clayton is one fine guy, And one of the best hill climbers out there. He is a blast to ride with. I knew he could not stand to just quit!!!
