Got a terrible heat-related misfire though - think we're having problems with the fuel boiling in the rail again - had sorted it but a few revalves on the dampers has got it riding well enough to be on the throttle much more.
Fuel tank to the front I think!

Wow! The boys at East lynn in WV would love this ride. What is the drivetrain in this machine?

The misfires have cracked a seal, it's down on compression and lost about 100bhp :(

Right, after a lot of work we managed to source a new series 2 Renesis engine - with ~500 miles on it, so not even run in yet.
There's a lot of changes to it - different end plates, wider sump, revised oil pump, doubled oil pressure (80psi at idle  ), different injectors, high flow water pump, etc, etc, so it took a fair bit of work to make it fit, but I finally finished tweaking the engine mapping last night and we let her fly down the little test track, and she's running nicely.
Even better, with all the alterations and map tweaks she now holds on to 90% of peak power right from 7500rpm to 9400rpm - and it doesn't really drop off badly until she hits 10krpm, she really moves up top now.
Engine is a bit tight so it wants a lot more milage on it to free her up a bit, ready for the next event in 3 weeks - thankfully, even after missing 3 months racing, we accumalated enough of a lead early on to still be in front at the minute - but it's only by 1 point, so we need to make sure she's reliable for the next one :D

Bar loosing a tyre at a tight chicane and a slight oil weep she held together all weekend on a very slippery course, it really wasn't a 2wd course tbh, the uphill slogs through peat bogs stranded a couple and the rough rocky tracks on the way down killed the rest. in light of that ran at 9/10ths all weekend rather than risk the car, made it through the peat bogs every time and ended up 10th overall, 1st in class, and we've won the 2wd Championship this year with it by 101 points, despite missing a couple of races to change the engine, and a few due to work constraints.
Back in the workshop for some improvements over winter now (namely, replacing the fairly tired 30 year old Bilstiens on the back with another pair of Foxes, sorting out some sort of limited slip diff, and a revalve of the front dampers to match the new rears). Probably make a new wiring loom and perhaps stick a digidash in to get rid of some of the wiring under the dashboard too, few cooling and reliabilty tweaks.

Cheers guys, pity we missed some events due to work and the engine swap really, otherwise we'd have been 3rd overall too
2 years of development has been worth it
Another 3 months over the winter might just see us up there in the consistancy too.

Well, a 2 years on, the buggy's in pieces and the first event is fast approaching (engine half built, gearbox needs rebuilding, half the suspension is off, new underbody armour needed, etc, etc - usual case of throw it together the week before and cross your fingers).

Anyway, thought I'd show a few of the upgrades from this year (had plenty last year but was mainly reliabilty and cooling work!) and some piccies - don't really need much description, you guys know how this lot hammers together anyway

A few in the mud:

Last winters upgrades:

Image

Carbotech XP10's, didn't really need the extra braking power over the XP8's, they're just a bit harder wearing (although pushing hard with the cutting brakes we often melt the wheel bearing grease out now!)

Image

Tired 25-year year old bilstiens replaced with another set of Fox coilovers:

Bit of abuse at the first events:

Yukon coil upgrade:

Broke the 9" diff :(

Image

Mainly 'cause it was at 9krpm and spinning the wheels all the way up this grass field and around the corner....

And this winter, new front geometery and arms:

Plenty of camber
Image

Plenty of width too:

Image

New towers - had to angle the shock as it's only got 8" of travel, really could have done with 10" or 12" shocks, but didn't have the money spare:

Image

Plenty more travel whilst we here:

Engine is in the middle of being rebuilt with the aim of supercharging it this summer, gearbox is getting stripped to fit custom 3rd and 4th gears to bring them down to being a lot more usable, also getting a lick of paint as we're on TV this year!

Collected this too:

2 of those on the shelf now, collected the first one last year too :D

And got very close to being on the podium for the outright championship versus all the big money 4wd cars too, until the diff incident :(

Doh, just realised half the pictures don't show properly - right click and 'view picture' should do it, I'll resize them later.

Should have cut the plate off right down to the beam and taken that outer tube down there ideally, however, the flat part gives a nice place to mount a mudguard on with no risk of taking the shock mount out if we brush a tree, so chopped it off flat with that top plate.

Well, spent the weeking fabricating the new front mudguard mounts, made new steering tie-rods, and stripped the steering rack.
Rack had loads of play in it and no provision for any adjustment for wear and tear, so I had to sand the whole case down by hand with wet + dry paper, until it got back to a nice, tight sliding fit again, then bond tiny strips of 0.25mm thick shim steel to the rack bar to bring it back into proper engagement with the pinion, and then make some more tiny strips of shims to give the appropriate clearance back on the casing, as well as changing all the support bearings.

It involved lots of swearing.
And it's a good job the firm that make the rack have gone bust so I can't go over the pond and kick them square in the nuts.

Even started rubbing down and painting the front arms, shiny things on the car for once!
