Found this interesting turbine while looking up gas turbines. This particular one turns 19k rpm's with just 20 psi of air. Very simple design from 100 years ago. You can run fluids, air, Steam, ect, Through them. Not buggy related but if someone's got a good enough imagination it could be.

Interested in backyard stuff like in the video, not high dollar stuff like your talking about. I just find it intriguing that someone can get that kind of rpm's out of that simple machine. These guys are making them out of cd's and turning 20k rpm's. Seem's like someone could make one of steel and hook to an exhaust pipe and use that waisted energy for something.

Hmm....sounds a bit like a turbo to me...

We need to find a good way to convert heat energy into useable mechanical energy in a small package. Heat loss in combustion engines is a huge problem when it comes to efficiency.
There are designs for six-stroke engines and such to use heat, but they just aren't good enough yet.

Like a turbo but the plates are smooth so the only thing it's good for is a lot of rpm's and probably not much torque. But they say the turbine is about 40% efficient where as gas engines are below 30%.

I don't know what can be done with a lot of rpm's but no torque. I'm stumped

You would get your Torque by attaching it to a gear box. Would work similar to most 14,000 RPM small CC Jap bikes

Well, yes, but what are you going to use to spin it? That process has to be pretty efficient as well to make it worth it. Store compressed air? Make steam with heat?
If you would use your exhaust, I guess you could run a generator.

The only issue with things like this is that the benefit must outweigh the cost. I think that is why we don't see many of these types of things.

Turbos make sense because they make your engine more efficient and don't require many external mechanics to make them beneficial. They don't have much torque either, but they spin really fast too, which is why they work. No gearbox required.

I understand what you are saying. We are just talking theroy are we not. The means to power it are as you say, air, steam etc. The Turbo is a different animal. Its purpose is a compressor to force air thru an internal combustion engine at a higher rate than a N/A engine can do. It just so happens that has the exhaust avalableto drive it.

I know how a turbo works, haha. It seems we are always on different wavelengths and combating eachother.
