Someone mentioned they would feel better if they saw some pics of a one car garage. So here's my "shop"
When I bought this house I was only into motorcycles so this garage was plenty big. The next house I buy is gonna have at least a two car garage and a basement.
Sadly this isn't a joke

However, I live alone, so I don't have a "man cave" My whole house is mine. My fridge is in my living room, I have pictures of naked women on my family room wall (I take those down when my mom comes over), I have a pirate flag for a curtain, my motorcycle has been in my family room, there is a cylinder head on my kitchen table, gun cleaning solvent on my coffee table, and my kitchen has been under construction for 5 years and nobody complains. Just stating all of that makes me feel way better about my garage.

this brings back fond memories of friends with harleys disassembled in the living room, chevy parts covering the dining room table, oil and grease on the carpet, empty beers all over the place. the good ole days

Man I thought having a mill was a man cave requirement. I could have avoided moving this heavy thing in here. Image

pm sent dave... Just got to keep your eyes out for deals, my uncle was scrapping stainless food machinery for Heinz, and got the bridgeport, so I paid $500 for it from him... HGR in cleveland usually has some decent buys, if it hasn't had the nuts ran off the machinery...

How are you guys powering those Bridgeports? Every one Ive seen has been 3 phase 460 volt. Are you guys running transformers & phase converters or did you swap motors to single phase 240 volt?

to power up the bridgeport, i bought a little drive, for about 200 bucks, it adds that extra leg for 3 phase now for my lathe whch has a higher horsepower, i use a rotary phase converter. believe it or not, when i run this equipment, i really dont notice it on my electric bill.

My residential supply is limited to 100 amp 240 volt. I have to keep my equipment on the small side. I envy you guys.

i only have 100 amp service 240 volt single phase in the house, and i just ran 50 amp out in the garage, thats plenty. its not like your running all of the machines at once,

Check the amp load on your panel and make shure it is balanced from one leg of 240 to the other. If you are pulling all that stuff off of one leg you will have the light dimming problems and it can actually make you electric bill higher.
Also you can get single phase 220 motors for most mills. You will loose a little hp with a single phase, so you just have to take smaller cuts.

When I get a bigger garage I'm getting a mill. Actually I have a slab house so I could put one in the family room........hmmmmmmmmm...........where's my tape measure.....

I built a rotary phase converter. They aren't really very hard to build. The physical packaging of the system is the hardest part. Most the original bridgeport motors that I've seen can be wired either 220 or 440. My J head came out of a local school's machine shop when they revamped it. I found my lathe on craigslist.

Mine is cluttered right now working on the new buggy, but if it was not a new buggy build,it would be something else tore down in it.
