Post subject:  Front Coil-Over Recommendations for 2x4 Trailing Arms

I just whipped up some 2x4 arms and figure I miswell do it right so I'm considering some coil over shocks for them and taking out the leafs. What's a good 10" coil-over shock that's not too pricey?

Thanks for the help,
Adam

Fox is the best bang for the buck. 4" longer arms put a lot of levarage on shocks so this is not a place to be cheap.

I used the fox nitrogen shocks on the front and the back, and i love them. they are pretty easy to adjust, you just get your bottle of nitrogen and play with the pressure, on the front, im running about 230 psi. when i ordered them from down south motor sports, i told the guys exactly what im doing with them, and he adjusted the valving according to my needs, and he put in the right amount of oil. heres some pictures of how i did mine

I've been running fox coil-overs for about 5 years, and no problems yet! I think you can get them for around $180 or so a piece with 5/8 shafts and no resivor. Try e-bay or pacific customs. Drews will give you a good deal on sway-away shocks too!

nope! It does include the "coil-over" kit. thats the slider, nuts, and retainer, but no springs. I got new springs from speedway for I think $40 a piece, so another $160 for all 4. it adds up!

What spring weights and valving are you using?

I think my woods car had 250# over 350# with 4" longer arms. I don't remember the valving. It was GREAT in the woods, but way too soft for racing.

Thats a lot more spring than I antisapated. Mine are 100 over 150 w/30/35 valving. When I ordered them they Insisted that they wer not too light. Against my better judgement I ran with it. Well the long and the short is they suck! They do nor bottom out however they do not ride smooth at all.

So what do you think they should be ody to get a nice smooth ride through the woods? Numbers like racebuggy1098 said?

There is no "right " answer. The spring rate is a product of the corner weight of your car minus the unsprung weight. I run 200/150 on mine that's with 2 1/2 x 1 arms. Also where your lower shock mount is in relation to the main pivot plays a big part, the further away from the main pivot the lower the spring rate will be. I don't think I could be happier with the way mine rides. SAW and FOA have calculators to help with spring rates.

I've got a buddy with the same front end as me and he run 400/500 lbs springs on the front of his car and loves it! My race buggy runs 350/450 and its a light buggy. I think if you get in the ball park, you'll be just fine!

If your arms are only 2 1/2 over then I would think they would be to heavy. I am thinking that the150 over 200 like Mikes would be more in line for mine. Maybe even 250 over 200. keep in mind at the time I ordered the shocks I guessed the corner weight at 250#. As it turns out after some weight redistribution and putting the buggy on a scale the corner weight is actually 350#.

Yea Im just planning out my next buggy build and writing up a parts list. Figuring out weights and what not. This helps me get a good ball park for now.

I was thinking a arm but I think I might be happy with a coil over front end.
