I'm rebuilding a buggy I recently bought.. currently has stock front and rear shock locations - kingpin front end, swing axle rear. 1600dp for power. Not going to use it for anything extreme - mostly for a few trips to turkey bay / LBL each year.

for the front, I was going install lower control arm mount kits and turn the front beam 1/4" , then use a monroe matic plus, that is 13.6" compressed, 22.7" extended with 9" travel. It is 3" longer compressed than stock, and 5" longer extended.... Hmm, after typing it out, maybe it's long compressed? Not sure how much length that lower mount would provide... maybe another inch.

for the rear, same "monroe-matic plus" but with 18.250 compressed, 31.0 extended with 12.750 travel, and I was going to use the stock bottom location and make a mount for the top that would accommodate it.

I'm sure you guys prefer the more off road specific stuff, but this buggy is on a $1k budget and I have a lot of work to do to it. This would give me some more travel vs. stock without breaking the bank - the front shocks are around $22 each and the rears around $25 each.

Hey Nick,

Welcome to the site.

As for you shock question, I think the shocks you are looking at might be a little too long for the stock suspension. I think you will need something that can compress shorter than 13 inches.

However, I like you idea. I have used a shock from Autozone that went from 20 inches to 8 inches and they have a lifetime warranty :lol: :lol: :lol:

I believe they were made for the back of a Mazda pick-up and cost around $11 each. The part number is 733518.

i say for the front shocks just keep the stock one that go to the kinpin mounts thats what i use and ride hard on them they work great and if u at a 1k budget use the extra money on the motor or whatever

Longer shocks on stock mounts will actually give you less avalable travel than a stock shock. In order to make use of a longer travel shock you will need to relocate the top mount. You can buy a kit that will replace the stock sheet metal shock towers and will allow you to use the shocks that you are talking about. Personally I would Install the shock tower kit or extend yours. You can never have to much travel. You can easily not have enough.

Also using a shock with more than needed travel will use more oil,,,thus run cooler and be more effective.

I had seen the tower kits that come with both the taller towers and the lower mounts for about $80. I'll have to see how everything else goes budget wise. The rear end isn't too bad because I'm going to rebuild the rear cage anyway and can incorporate mounts into the design. I'm on month 1 of a several month process, and I'm trying to plan it all otu before I buy stuff so everything's still up in the air. (though appletreeauto has 10% off and free shipping till the end of the month, and they have some stuff I need at reasonable rates)
