I am going to start my front air shock install soon. I need to redo the upper shock mounts but do I need to beef up the lower mounts? It’s a thing front end with stock arms and stock lower shock mounts. My question is will the stock lower shock mounts hold up to air shocks. Are there any tricks to get the stock threaded studs out? I was thinking to remove the studs and tap the hole to run ½” grade 8 bolts or do I need to gusset it somehow?

I would do what ever it takes to make it a double shear mount.

If your intension is to replace the leaf springs with the air shocks then I would think the stock setup will be on the weak side. The leaf springs normally take most of the load. Now the air shocks would be springs and shocks taking full load. I am sure you allready know this. Just throwing info out there.

I’m about to start fabbing the front arms for double shear shock mounts. Let me know what you think before I start.

By the way does anyone know what the max travel is on a thing front end? I have 8” air shocks and hoping they will be enough. I cycled the suspension and could only get around 7” of travel before it felt like the ball joints were binding.

I am going to weld the tubing on so I have some were to weld the gusset.

Should I put the gusset on top of the arm like this or in the center of it?

As long as your shock is not mounted at the end of the arm you will always have the ability to get more travel than the stroke of the shock. (I have 10" air shocks with 4"+ king/link arms with 15 " of travel.)

Seeing that you are butt welding tubing on, the full plate will give you the trianglation required for full strength.

Well I think I have the shock mounts and bumper done. All I have to do is wait on the limit straps and weld some gussets on the back side of the bump stops. I'm not a professional welder but I think it will hold up to the air shocks. Some day I will have a bigger welder, this was all done with a 110V 135amp Hobart.

I wrapped the top shock boss with .140 gage steel to help keep them in place.

I moved the small gussets in on the bumper like Mike suggested for an easier strap spot

Bump stops I still need to add a gusset to the back side.
