I got laid off AGAIN just before Christmas so I am on a budget. I have some 10” fox air shocks I want to install in the front of my rail. Can I just make some through rods or do I need to spend the $50-$60 and buy them. I can handle that amount but if I don’t have to I don’t want to. I have some ½” solid round bar. Can I just thread the ends and put some fine thread top lock nuts and large washers on them? Or use a castle nut and pin them? Or should I look for some of the split lock nuts (not sure what they are called) like the ones that come with the kits? Any other suggestions please.

Thanks, Brad

What did you use to lock the nuts on? I heard a guy used some nylon lock nuts and they fell off and 1 arm slid out and broke his shock.

Just the cheap grade 2 threaded rod from lowes or home depot? Or should I look for grade 5 or 8?

I got mine with my beam, but seem like they could be easily made. They got a nut and a jam nut. I was think about changing them out to a nut with pin..

The 1/2" round you have will work just fine. Its better than all thread because you can thread down to where the nut would stop and then you would not have sharp threads cutting on the ID of the arm hole. I used the crimp style nuts they sell for the trru and double nutted it for Insurance. The only issue is the tires can hit the ends when they are out that far so check them.

you can do what you want I don't see a piece of low grade all thred wearing out a hole in a chromoly arm but use what you want mine are about 8yrs old and the ones on my 4 seater are about 12 yrs old still doing good
Brad when your bushings wear you will need to adjust them

I used 1/2 inch smooth rod and threaded a short section on the end and then used some "clamp" nuts on them. The castle nut and cotters would be good to you dont want too much "stack up" with waser and jam nuts and stuff cuz it will stick out and bite your tires in tight turns under compression.

I know what you mean by stack up under pressure. Im clear now buy could see it rubbing in tight turns and speed in sticky dirt.. So what i was gonna do is you a clamp style jam nut with a chrome cap nut. Safety and looks good..
