 Post subject: coil over spring rates

I hope some of you guys can help here. I'm going to order FOA coil overs for the rear next week, but don't know the wieght or unsprung wieghts to do calculations for springs. I'm rebuilding about half the cage on this POS due to last owners fabrication stupidity. The frame is originally a JSC invader 2 seater with glass side pods and hood. I'm adding, 3X3 hd trailing arms with hiem jointed plates, Empi race prep 930s, drive and stub axels. I'm hopeing 18" wheel travel. I'm going to suffer with freshend up drums brakes for now. 31" tires for on the track,(for wieght) and 33" for the bush.(for more clearance). I'll start mods to the front suspension, (longer wider)once rear is done. Engine is 2276 and running a 5 rib until I can go through the 6.
OK, so what I need are some wieghts, spring rate suggestions and photos of your buggies to compare to mine. Thanks for your help, Dave.

Dave I would strongly suggest getting much further with the build before I ordered springs. You can get the shocks to do mounts and such. Untill I had some some good numbers to go by, I would hold off on the springs. They get a little pricy if you GUESS wrong.

Thanks, your right . I'm just trying to save some time and money. Our dollars been doing a bit of a back stroke, then duty at the border and brokerage fees at the door. Worked with out a day off in Aug on a side job so I could buy a bunch of buggy stuff. Don't want to waste my money on something more practical.

I agree with Mike, its hard to get you spring rate right the first time, most of my friends that have used coilovers have bought more than one set of springs to get their spring rate where they want it. I am going to run coil overs on the front of my new buggy and my springs are 250/275 on a 10 inch travel shock. It worked on the buggy they were on before, so I m hoping for the best on mine! :D

250/275 seem really high for a front supension.

It was on a chaindrive, they say there is alot more weight on the front end. My friend johnny used the exact same shocks on his conventional buggy and he said it did well. I think the springs are about 7-8 years old so the have probably lost some "boing boing" over the years or whatever the tech term is for it? Hope they work good on mine, my buggy is gonna be heavier than B-Line or Invader. It's gonna be a big convential buggy!!

I am running Fox 2.0 coilovers and the spring rates are 100 over 150 with a 30/35 valving. They are a little on the light side however they do not bottom out and seem to work fine. I stand corrected the springs are 100/200.

DAMN! You guys are light!! I just put a new set on my race car 400 over 500!! I used to run 250 over 350 which was unbeatable in the woods, but too soft for racing. I have seen such a wide range of coils work, that I honestly don't think you can foul them up. My car really doesn't feel much diff. with the heavier springs, but it handles ALOT better at speed. Woods riding, you don't really go fast enough to need all that spring. I'm also running 4" longer arms in the front. that might make a difference :roll:

The coils Im talking about are on the front.

200 over 150 on the front of mine, rides nice :mrgreen:

I bet , madmike, if you were to jump up to my spring rate, you would be surprised at how little of a differance it is. It is a bit stiffer at slow (parking lot) speed, but thats it. During long races, with the soft springs, it was actually harder on me than with the heavy ones. My whole point is, how wide of a range there is with coils and they all work :mrgreen:

Most everything we do is at trail speed, OK maybe a little faster depending who your trying to keep up with. At $300 or so for a set of 4 springs, my set-up works just fine thank you. :wink:
