Another option,,I use thick walled tubing, one inch OD with 1/2 inch ID,, 1/4 wall tubing. I then drill and tap. These things don't bend. A little heavy for sure,,but I have not bent one yet.

What does it take to change out tierod ends for heims? Do you just drill out the tapered holes and use hardened bolts through the joints? Are there different kinds of heim joints, and if so, which ones do I need? -Thanks |

the way I make tierods I use a piece of 1 in buggy tube weld a 3/4 nut on each end never had one fail drill out tapred holes use a missalinement bushing to reduce hole in heim to 1/2 in [they make them ] go to speedway.com then use 1/2 grade 8 bolts TA DA |

Thanks, you'd be surprised how little info there is about this on the web. I searched for an hour or more today and didn't find jack. So with welded nuts on each end, I guess you don't worry about left handed threads on one end? Makes sense though, the heims are easy to take loose and adjust. Not like you need to be adjusting them once they're set. Sounds like a plan... |

Dang, that place has everything. For the price of their tubes I prolly couldn't even buy tubing and thread it or weld it myself for less. That looks like the way to go, and it's anodized too. I noticed they have rod ends w/ 1/2" studs already built on. Looks pretty cool but are they any count? Can't use the misalignment bushings with them. By the looks of them, you might not even need the bushings. Any thoughts? |

I made mine out of 1 1/4 120 wall, Q.S. components sell a weld in bung that slides right in this size tubing and is real nice looking, you can get them in left or right hand thread for your heims. I drilled a 1/2 hole in the tubing where the bung slides in and plug welded it plus welded around the shoulder. With a little grinding and polishing, your tie rods will look like one solid piece and be just as strong. Q.S. components also sell the jamb nuts and heims. The bungs are like $6 dollars each I think.

10-4 on the molly You've got an awesome setup there, tater. Looks really strong, good and clean too. All this makes me wish I was building a new buggy instead of fixing all the crap I've tore up on my old neglected beater. I guess I will just keep plugging along with what I have for now. |

Yeah, I hear ya. This is all just practice for the day I do build a new one. It does get frustrating sometimes. I like my old buggy. One day I'll have it straightened out like I want it. I got a pretty good deal on it. It's had some money and good parts put on/ in it, but it has also been abused and neglected for a long time. When I got it I started with the basics to get it trail worthy and have been trying to upgrade things as I can afford to. I ordered my steering parts tonight. That should be a good upgrade I won't have to worry about for a long time. Ha, it needs balljoints and bushings too, so I plan to do it all while I've got it apart. Drilling out those holes... Thanks for the heads up on that!! LOL I'm gonna have to get creative to finish those. A step bit was the only thing I had that would work, and it works really good. Except that I have to go at it from both sides and it still leaves a little bit in the middle of the hole. I need taller steps! I've got three 5/8 bits but none of them will even bite into it. I appreciate all the info and suggestions. It's awesome to see the different ways everyone does things. Thanks! |

No problem man, thats one of the best things about this site. All the free advise and comments, lord knows I need all i can get!! Sounds like you got that front end about covered, oh yeah, by the way, you'll need a 5/8 drill bit cause you cotta drill out them holes
