My stock steering box has some slop after 4 rides. The bolts on top cap are tight but the plastic plug is pushed to the inside and there is an adjustment screw with a lock nut on the top. I assuming the adjustment screw takes out backlash but not sure. Doesn't seem to do anything when I try to adjust it. What's the best way to adjust? Are they rebuildable or should I look for a new one?

I know you can do some sdjustment but when we did it was always temperary. I have switched to a rack for these reasons. Always bolt a spare steering box to your front beam!!!!

Note that you can easyly over adjust it. If you do it wears to the next stage of adjustment in short order. Also take the steering lock to lock to check for binding. The worm gear wares more in some spots than others.

I wouldnt think they would be rebuildable at home. I'm sure someone can do it, but probably more trouble than its worth for a less than good result. I tried a cheap reman ( in fact its stil sloppin around on my buggy) and it is junk. A TRW built steering box is well worth the extra $50 , IMO. I got a TRW ( about $125) for my wife's buggy, and it steers like a dream, even with two universals in the steering column (Because I was too lazy to make new tie rods when I changed hers to a single center mounted seat in front and didnt want to move the box to the middle of the beam , now her steering column has two 45* (almost) angles in it  )

If every last ounce of weight savings aint real important to you, I think a nice power rack set up may serve you the best. And I bet that Saturn motor has a PS pump on it, dont it? Very sweet for trail riding!

(I guess that could be taken the wrong way, I aint sayin thats all you CAN do with PS, but it is awesome for the trails on a good sized buggy).

I agree, the TRW thats some of the guys were running was so much better than any stock I have seen. Seemed to turn better and last longer.
