a jack, chain, and a hammer. put the jack under the spring plate. take the chain and hook it to the lowest point of your jack to the frame. jack it up wiggle the torsion bar out. move the torion 2 or 3 splines jack it back up with the jack and knock it back in. u should be able to do it alone but a buddy helps. :] any questions u can call me330-9482817

Get an angle finder to make sure your the same on bith sides. If you set your angle different you ride will be softer on one side.

The splines are different inside to outside so you can make smaller adjustments then just moving the spring plate around the outside set of splines if you are having trouble matching the angles on both sides.

Jeff your method is not only very dangerous its hard on the torsion bars. How do you get them back on?

i mark where the spring plate was and then move it a few teeth.... i dont run them anymore so it didnt make a difference to me, all it is doign is releasing tension off of them i dont see how it could be that much harder on them. its really not that dangerous, you stand away from it the only way it would hit you is if you were laying underneath of it.

Before you jack the spring plate back up and hammer it in. Get 4 longer spring plate cover bolts and start the 3 you can get with no tension on the spring plate. Next jack the plate up just enough to get the 4th bolt started then hammer the plate in and tighten the 4 bolts. If you don’t do it this way you will more than likely have problem getting the 4 bolts to line up because there is so much tension on the plate it makes it lean towards the front of the buggy making the holes miss aliened

To each his own I suppose. Your young and time will help lol.
As far as the torsions go when they are released in that fashion they will over spring past there memory set and can cause stress fractures.

after i drive the springplate on i slide a 4 foot pice of pipe over the end of the torsion and sit on it. i can move it around enought to start the boats. seem to work good for me.

i also do what brad does in a sort, darek (baja1965) told me about using all thread... cut long pieces of all thread to slide the caps on then tighten that up and remove and replace with bolts one at a time.

Well I'm needing to do this also. Not only is the buggy sagging it's an inch off from one side to the other. Any more info that might be helpful? I can't seem to get the process right in my head. I'll just have to start taking crap apart and figure it out.

the easiest method is to use a turnbuckle. unbolt the arm attach said turnbuckle to spring plate and other end to top shock mount. twist turnbuckle and raise the plate up off the stops then pry it out a bit and twist the turnbuckle down. it is not only the safest way to do it because it can never spring loose and one person can do it. set the angle you want and start one bolt on your end cap, then take a C clamp and clamp the end plate and start the other two bolts. crank it up over the stops with the turnbuckle and tighten down.

Stupid question since I haven't put any of the suspension stuff together. I am in the process of trying this tonight. and was wandering exactly what all do I need to disconnect? I have one side jacked up with a jack stand underneath the torsion tube, the shock off and getting ready to unbolt the trailing arm from the spring plate but there is nothing there to catch the trailing arm so it will drop and was wondering if that will mess up my axles coming out of my transmission. Do I need to unbolt the axels also? Or will the drop hurt anything? It looks I should be able to swing the trailing arm plate arond far enough to slip the torsion spring plate past. Or do I need to take the whole trailing arm off? Just don't want to screw anything up since I just got it running.

Appreciate a quick reply as I'm friggin with this tonight.

Thanks

You might try using a come-a-long to hold the spring plate up and then ease it down.

Appreciate it Larry, Will pick back up on it in the morning. I think I know what needs to be done but wasn't sure how far I needed to tear the buggy down to get to my spring plate. Never did get pm though.

This is the setup I came up with. Worked extrememly well. It was easier than I thought it would be, just had to get into it. I tend to make things harder than they should be.

Thanks for everyones help. Hope these pics clear it up for someone doing it for the first time. I ended up with about 34 or 35 degrees of angle with the tension released on the torsion.

im getting ready to do my buggy and i found a video series on you tube that i think would be real helpfull to some people, but i dont know how to show the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMxBolHOJR4 or maybe i do, this is a 4 part video, i dont know if anyone has seen this but it cleared up a few things for me as well as raised some questions, the angle on the spring plate, if you got the buggy jacked up isnt that gonna throw it off ? and what is about the maximum angle of the spring plate or axle angle that you would want before you start thrashing cv's and axles? i plan on notching the spring plates a little bit to get more height, there almost touching now but my buggy sets way to low in the back and my axles are almost straight, so im thinking i should be able to jack it up a good ways, maybe one click on the inner and maybe one on the outer?????? thi video has got to open some disscussion on the degree side of things,,,,chime in folks!! and if that link dont work type in lowering the vw type 3 rear, i know im not lowering but same difference

Yes, the angle will be different when you jack up the buggy. You have to "zero" the buggy, or use a little math. The little flat spot on top of end of the torsion, right above about center of the housing tube, there is a small threaded bolt hole in it usually, it needs to be at zero degrees. Either do that by adjusting your jackstands under the front of the buggy, OR you can just measure whatever angle the little flat spot is sitting at as it sits jacked up in the rear only and add (or subtract, depending on how your dial indicator is set up) this number to the degree of relaxed angle you are trying to set your bars at.

When you are trying to measure angle on your cv's, you measure it AT the cv's. The angle of your cv joint, flat on top of it,perpendicular to the tranny vs the angle of the axle. The spring plate angle and trailing arm length determines the cv angle, but it is not a measurement of cv angle.

These are the max safe angles I've been told, You may be able to run a lil more with clearancing work in the cv's:
type 2 bus joints-18 degrees max
930's -24 degrees max
Dont know what car or 934's will handle.

If your axles are flat and you got 34 degrees on your plates, you must not have had your buggy zero'd when you set your torsion.
