Post subject:  front tires rub

When I turn the wheels all the way left or right they rub on my frame. It is starting to wear on the frame in those spots. I have a balljoint front end, not sure what the frame is exactly. My question is can you get wheel spacers for the wide 5 lug pattern, and where? Will they hold up offroad, or just break? Or is there a better way to fix this without breaking the bank?

I would not recommend wheel spacers unless you want to have harder sterring due to the increased Scrubb radius. I take it your using a stock VW steering box/beam and the stops have been removed. I would either add stops to limit the movement of the Pittman arm to keep the wheels from hitting the frame or add a steering damper and use it to limit the travel so the tires dont hit. Either way works the advantage to using a steering damper is it helps when you hit rocks to not yank the wheel out of your hands and increases the life of the steering box. Its a little hard on the damper however there cheap and easyer to replace. I modified a standard shock to use on my Red buggy, works great.

The factory steering damper does nothing to limit travel on my buggy. my frame is also worn in to where the tire rubs on the frame.

i have a warrior frame and a ball joint front end too. It rubs if i run factory front rims too-- i bought a set of rims that are dished different and that solved my problem, it just sits a couple of inches wider in the front

You could weld on an adjustable stops [nut and bolt combo].

I THOUGHT ABOUT RUNNING A DIFFERENT OFFSET ON THE FRONT TO FIX THAT PROBLEM ON MINE, BUT I DO NOT WANT TO GIVE UP MY CENTERLINE WHEELS. I GUESS I WILL USE WHEEL SPACERS OR DO NOT TURN AS SHARP.

1TOWTRUCKING, The factory damper was not intended to be used as stops. The stop is at the pittman arm.

You have four basic choices to fix the problem.

1) Use smaller front tires.
2) Change the offset of your wheels.
3) Widen your front beam
4) Install some type of mechanical stop

i had that happen with my old frame and all i did was turn the rims around. it gave me 2 or 3 more in. of offset. worked for me for years.

i had my rims flipped around also for about 6 or 7 months the wide 5 pattern with tractor tires on them i thought i liked it until i flipped them around again how they were supposed to be and i could control it so much better up over hills and it was allot easier to steer i lost some turning radius but i just use the cutter break in the tight situations

ODYKNUCK,
If you go to the first post that you replied to on this subject.Read the 3rd sentence, it goes on then it reads " OR ADD STEERING DAMPER AND USE IT TO LIMIT THE TRAVEL,SO TIRES DO NOT HIT". I was just throwing in my 2 cents on what you are suggesting some one to do.Then you replied to my post, YES, I KNOW THAT THE PITMAN ARM CONTROLS TRAVEL.

Sounds like a missunderstanding here. I was not underminding you I was also responding to your responce in that the factory damper has more travel then needed from lock to lock. The damper I used on my buggy has less travel so it will limit the steering travel.

I did turned my rims ( 700x15 tires) around this morning and they don't rub at all now. Wished I done that when I read this post back then.
