| Post subject: | Balljoint to kingpin swap Questions |
I beleive there is a difference in width from a BJ and a KP,so my question is,how much work would it take to swap in a KP beam on my buggy that has a BJ beam.I have a brand new or what they call reconditioned BJ on my buggy so if anyone is looking for 1 and has a good KP let me know,Thanks. |

I'd run the ball joint if it was me, I ran ball joint in the woods and love it, especially becuase your not replacing kingpins all the time. If it was reconditioned, then I would run it until you think it was time to upgrade.....plus, unless your a really good welder, your welds aren't going to be as nice as the factory welds............just my 2 cents Donnie |

Is there any way to raise the beam up a little.I've heard of guys cutting the center out and twisting it a little and then weld it.It is sitting a little low in the front and when i push down on the front it dont spring back up,it just stays there. |

Sounds like your shocks are shot. I dont know if you can cut and turn a ball joint beam, but I know you can buy lowered spindles that will give you more ride height. Check your shocks out, they may be used up. I runa ball joint and I love mine. Donnie

I would run the ball joint. Its not an easy task to change from ball joint to king pin. I have had a ball joint that looked like it was about to pop out for about 7 years now and its still holding. I even beat it so hard it broke the factory welds off the beam clamps but the ball joint still held. Unless you are going to go to long travel $$$$$$ I would leave it alone. You can cut and turn b/J's but you just have to watch how much becase they don't take as much angle as King pin. |

It must have sat awhile too because it was pretty stiff like you describe and after a few trips it free up a bit. |

The torsion springs are probably shot, that would explain why its sagging and wont return to ride heighth after compression. Regular shocks are there to dampen the rebound and compression, so if the shocks were worn out, it would be more likely to come back up, not less likely. You can cut & turn a bj front end. I wouldnt turn the center any more than about a 1/4", though. Much more than that and your arms will be too close to vertical, and it will ride like a road wagon, unless some of your leafs are broken. The bj on my two seater was clapped out bad before I turned it, and it had some broken leafs in it. Larry |
