Post subject:  Power Steering

Looking to install Power steering on my new Buggy. After doing some research on Howe etc its to expensive ($1500.00 to $2,000.00) to go that route. Has anybody done any thing different that works.

I am assumming your putting these on V8s and your Chain drive Buggys.
Are they rack systems or a standard steering box like the manual ones guys are installing on little Buggys. Do you have any pics of them installed. Are they installed in the center or the traditional stock location?

RockRockets, I priced the Charlyn here in ohio and they want $450.00 for it. Do you have a number for the one down there. Do you have pics of how you did the pump setup?
Racebug, I assume you race with that set up and it appears your rack has held up. I have been reading on other sites about that set up and a lot of guys claim that it will take out a rack in short order. Does your set up have a steering damper to help relieve the stress on the rack. I assume you flipped the gears in the pump because it would have run backwards. I have read that the Charlyn unit is a rack killer and thats one of the reasons guys went to a ram type system. They also commented that at high speeds the steering was not very stable. Have any pics of the setup.

if you run a good rack (wright or saco) it should hold up just fine. yes, on the road it is kinda dartybut off road, even up in the 80mph range, you cant tell.also zero bump-steer and i've got @ 18 inches of travel.

Post subject:  Power steering decision made

Do my recent findings on Ebay and the Samba I have decided to go with Servo/Ram steering. I have bought all Sweet componets off Ebay for $238.88 minus the two short lines from the servo to the ram. The Sweet pump came with a pully and a drive that I can possiabley adapt to the motor and a mounting bracket that will bolt to the frame along with the Resivoir and line and 2 - 8' lines that go up to the Servo. I also picked up a new Saco Rack with Aluminum tie rods with Hiems for $260.00 from the Samba. So for around $500.00 Im in. So I am able to have power steering with out breaking the bank. ITs a wonderfull thing! :D
