I seem to have a cv popping. It only pops when accelerating. I can't tell if it's inner or outer. I jacked the buggy up and put it in gear to watch/listen. I can't duplicate it that way,....but I noticed that axle plunging in and out as it turned. I'm running 930's and have 1/2" play with the axle. So it's not binding up. At idle speed you can move the axle in and out easily. I've checked twice to make sure the cv's are clocked. Maybe I missed something.
Any ideas?

I wouldn't worry if you have been running them with out breaking. My race car has always done that (everything maxxed out)and has never broken a cv.

They are 3 years old and been prepped. Running at 21 degrees maxed is at 24 degrees. Running moly101 grease.
The axle moving in and out as it turns is what i'm stumped on.
Your probably right racebug. Ive heard people runing them like that and never have a problem. But its bugging me why its doing that. The axle has plenty of slack in the cv??????????????

I have clocked mine 25 different ways and they still jump. its the ball trying to walk out of its groove. Usually I have my helmet on in the race buggy and that takes care of the popping noise!

Yep, they are clocked. 24 degrees isn't that high. They are rated for 28.

I'm beginning to think just run it. I keep an extra cv in the box anyway. I just hate to hold up other people if my rig breaks down.

Dont worry about that . If they have been riding long there's have broke down also. Just part of off roading .

Now if you are the guy that brings his buggy to camp broken to get other people to fix it befoe its unloaded...that is another story:mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

I thought my CV was popping as well. But it turned out to be the axle banging against the stub axle. I tightened the CV boots to hold the axle off the stub axle

Hmmmm....possible....but that wouldn't explain the axle riding in and out.

There is a dimple in a groove and under pressure it snaps and sends the shaft up. Turn the joint backwards or just ride soft for a long time until it seasons itself. (Wears back smooth).

Mine started doing the same thing 4th weekend. Started doing it after I sunk it in a mud hole. I checked it and no mud/water got in. Might have been me revving the piss out of it with one axle full droop.

It is a good policy for all things mechanical
to R&R any assembly once in a while.
Make sure that the spline moves smoothly in
and out of it's corresponding cv spline.
Polish the ball tracks and clean out all old
grease. Chances are good that you will find
something suspicious.
