This may be a stupid question but could the pivot for the air bag go on top at the frame instead of on the bottm at the arm ?

The angle that the bag needs to be on at the arm is constantly changing. The angle the bag needs to be at on the frame is static. Put the pivot where it's needed.
I sat here for 10 minutes trying to think of the right way to explain it. That's the best I can come up with.

mike what are your thoughts on a heim style pivot? I've seen that done on a buggy on this site
and is there a need for a "bump stop" to limit up travel?

Yeah, I must have missed that one, sounds like a terrible idea. I think we are stretching the limits of what the bag can do with a pivot that operates on one plane let alone thousands of them :?

I've seen guys force things to work that defy all mechanical logic.

Only thing worse than stretching a bag is pinching it. Yes, there should be a bump stop at the top of the stroke.

I'm almost to the point that I'm ready to mount my bags. I'm trying to read and gather as much info that I can before I decide which route to go. I've heard several ppl say don't overthink it just mount em and be done. but the pivot makes more sense to me. basically just trying to decide how to make that happen...haha

I know that some people like to have a pivot on bag mounts, but I think that is unnecessary and yes I have bags on my buggy without pivots and they work very well.
I believe that you are overthinking things(something that I am guilty of too). Just make the bag straight at the center of suspension travel and make sure that it will be within the compression and expansion limits after fully cycling suspension and you should be good.
The method that I use is not the only way to mount bags but it has worked very well for me.

But like Mike said the bottom mount is constantly changing angles so why not put a pivot in so the bag can run square like its designed to do. Mine was simple 1/4 inch plate bolted to the bottom of the bag with slots so you can adjust center. Welded to tabs on the plate and two tabs on the arm and ran a 1/2 inch shoulder bolt with a grease fitting and they have held up very well. Cycle the arm to the up position to see where the top should go. Vw inner pivot will cycle to the inside, parallel suspension will go straight up. The bags have about 8.5 to 9 inches of travel, I try to use all of it

On vw pivot guys I think I tilted my lower mount i to the inside slightly so its square with your upper mount

If it weren't for folks over thinking things we'd all still be walking or even worse, still using junk VW motors.
