How much more ground clearance would I gain going from stock rear arms to 3x3?

What cv joints are you running?

There are lots of things that will impact your ground clearance. Here is what the math would say..

Assuming your ride angle on your CV joints is roughly 20 degrees and does not change, you will probably get another 1 1/2 to 2 inches more at ride height.

That's what I meant...ride height increasement.

That's an extra bonus. I need to save my back and air bag it. I heard I need at least 2" wider arms to get the #3800 bags. So I might as well go ahead and get the 3x3 arms.

You might want to consider 2x3 arms instead. They will keep your back angle down and put less stress on the CV joints.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I was thinking the first number was width and 2nd number was length. Because I wanted to switch to 2x3's so I am not as wide?

first number is width. and with 930 cvs you should be able to get a pretty good amount of clearance with bags and limit straps.

Everything we measure we measure in length then width then height. 2X3= 2 longer 3 wider.

3X3 is the longest arm we can use before the back angle starts to have a negative impact on CV angle.

For every inch the arm is over 3" long, the transmission "should" be moved back 1".

Without doing a bunch of math, there is a point of diminishing returns. If we were to build, say a 8" longer arm, using 8" as an example only. Because of the back angle on the CV, a stock arm will have the same range of motion.

So I really need 2x3 arms. This will give me a 2" longer and 3" wider. I will be able to run airbags and get a softer ride. Right?

Wow ive always had 3x3 butt for some reason i thought 2x3 was still 3 inches back and 2 inches wider.
if they are both the same width, i dont see much advantage of not getting the extra inch back...

I just read this on another forum...

when they say 2x3 or 3x3 or 3x5 its just a measurement of length over stock vw sized trailing arms, as in 2 inches wider 3 inches longer..

Everything is about CV angle, wider arm gives up more travel. The reason for the 2x3 or the 3x2 is for the
18 3/4" axle. If I want a longer/wider arm for that axle length I would want to max out the width taking advantage of the CV angle that gives up the most travel.

Every 2X3 I have ever made is just that, 2 longer, 3 wider.

I could be the wrong one here.

The way I understand it, the only reason they made 2x3's was to use a stock bus axle. 3x3's need a 19-1/4" axle. if your buying axles anyway, go with 3x3's. You don't HAVE to move your transmission at all. your axles don't know the difference between down angle and back angle. it is just one angle. The race buggy we started with had been on mothballs since the late 70's or early 80's. it was one of the fastest buggies in the country back in its day. They had rear arms on it that were 3" longer than stock but stock width running 930's. not sure how it worked, but it did. now I'm just rambling on....

Well I just measured my buggy with 3x3, it measured 19" back(center of tube to stub axle) and 50" wide ( inside of arm to other arm). Also measured frame I just picked up that's supposed to have 2x3's on it, measured 19" back and 48" wide.

I AM WRONG. And I remember why. When I first stared to make trailing arms I tried to apply the logic I used above. Everything I do in the machine shop and in fabricating I (we) use length X width X depth. Well evidently in the buggy world, it's gotta be different. Because it's different and it's easier to go with the flow I labeled everything like everyone else.

A set of 2x3's are built 3 longer and 2 wider.

I just set up a jig to build a set of 2 x 3's and it proved my logic wrong and I do indeed build a 3" longer and 2" wider arm.

Sorry for the confusion.

I just got off the phone with Todd from Avery's he also confirmed the dimensions and added they don't make a 2x3 or a 3x2 they make a 2 1/2 X 2 1/2. It works for the 18 3/4" axle it cuts back on the back angle and eliminates confusion like 2x3 or 3x2.

I think the 2x3 and 3x2 have just gotten so confused that noone knows what is correct. This was from BlindChickenRacing...

So the way that's worded, 2/longer, 3/wider.
Screw it, I'll do the same as Todd's, 2 1/2" X 2 1/2" from now on, what do you think?

If you go to Dan's Performance and read about his arms it states the last number is the length. Thus stock width x 1in arms are 1in longer.
