That is right 40 degree CV Joints..

Here is my story....
I am currently running 4x5 dual pivot arms with 0 deg radius and the Transmission is in the stock position. Unfortunately, this combination creates a 14 degree back angle on the CV and significantly limits my travel. To keep from breaking CV Joints, I had to limit the travel on my 930 CV joints to around 15 degrees.

While I was contemplating options to fix the problem, I continued to break CV joints and RVCPerformance continued to honor their warranty and kept replacing the joints.

After replacing several CV joints, RCVPerformance mentioned a new Ball Spline axle they were making and I might be good fit. Obviously I jumped at the opportunity to try something new.

Over the next 4 months, I continued to talk with RCVPerformance about the new axle. Well, I am happy to say that they have finished the prototype and I should have it in my hands next week.

Here is the general idea..... RCVPerformance has joined 2 fixed 930 CV joints to a plunging axles. Rather than having the CV joints plunge, the axle will plunge. I know... I know... the high angle drive shafts guys already tried this. Here is the difference, rather than using a yoke style plunging axle, RCVPerformance is using ball bearings to allow the shaft to plunge without friction. Even under torgue the axle should still plunge without friction. Another benefits over the high angle drive shafts is that RCVPerfomance is using CV joints rather than U-joints.

Using the fixed CV joints, I will be able to extend the motion of the CV joint to approximately 40 degrees. In my case, this will drastically increase my rear ground clearance and allow me to raise up the buggy an additional 6-8 inches.

Here is a picture of the UTV set-up RCV Performance has already developed. The buggy version is very similar but the ends will have 930 CV joints.

When RCVPerformance tested the new ball spline axles, the axles have the same braking point as a Dana 44. I think that will work fine for a 2000 lb buggy.

I will take several pictures of the axles as well as Before and After Pics of the buggy.

I do not believe they have set a price yet but they will not be cheap. The UTV ball spline axles are $1000 each side corner. I believe the buggy axles with the 930 joints will be more.

I agree, they are a little pricey. It will be interesting to see how much travel I get with the new axles and CV Joints.

Right now, I am very limited on my travel due to the back angle on my CV joints. If I did not use these axles, I would have to move my transmission and engine back or get smaller trailing arms.

Moving the engine and trans back would be a major pain in the ass. All the mounts, cables and wires would need to be redone. Not to mention, it would move a lot of weight back.

I could buy smaller trailing arms but I would rather keep the extra travel if I can make it work. I am hoping to have approximately 24 inches of ground clearance with the new axles.

I should have the axles on Wednesday and I will take lots of pics.

I have always been a fan of having a yoke
on drive shafts, regardless of cv or universal
joints. I have run Datsun-Z successfully for
years and years off road.
Since my new buggy build will have longer
and wider trailing arms, I will now have room
for double-carden joints which are explained
here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constant-velocity_joint
As you can read, there is always going to be
"clocking" of the two ends relative to one another.
The placement of a double cardan joint in an
axle provides for changes in axle input/ output
radial indexing. In theory, by not relieving
disproportional radial loads in this matrix,
excessive wear... and ultimately failure can occur.

Hey MM. Are you sure it is the back angle that is hanging you up and not the dual pivot arm? I am running 5x5 arms with trans in stock location and I am running 26 degrees at full droop and about 22 at ride height with no issues, but I still run an elliptical style arm... Axles are sweet either way BTW... 40 degrees make my plunging 930's look like beetle cv's all over again....

Yes, you are correct. The dual pivot with Zero degree radius compounds the issue but my arms are also 4x5 not 5x5 which creates a greater back angle.

I could have also had axle length issues that could have created some other issues.

I don't see how the dual pivot arm will make a difference. You're trans flanges are still stationary and i run 5x5 with motor and trans slid all the way forward and 26* on axles. Been that way for 2 years now with no breakage

Dual pivot arms have no arch to the travel... Usually with those style arms you run out of axle before you run out of angle. I didn't consider the further back then wider factor. Wider is where the travel is until you need to fit... hahaha

Still don't understand the breaking... My buggy is a Sherman tank and I have bent 2 beams, 1 torsion, and now broke 1 built 6 rib (hence my decision for a buggy diet), plus 20,000 miles and the rocky mountains (see my under pressure post) on empi cv's and I haven't broke one yet....

P.S. Terry... No Hi-Jack intended but your buggy is a monster... You should open a "Curves" for buggies... Don't know how you kept it so light.... Props....

Terry, are you running a parallel swing or a stock swing tailing arm?
I don't like the term "duel pivot", both are duel pivot, inner and outer. If anything the stock swing trailing arm is more of a duel pivot, one behind center(inner) the other on center(outer).

Terry or anyone else running 5x5 arms, How long are your axles and how much back angle do you have?

I am trying to determine if my arms are really 4x5 but I do not have any reference points to use.

About time someone offered them off-the-shelf, I spoke to GKN about some a few years back but as they make them as bespoke items for every application the cost was extortionate, the only downside is they transmit more shock to the tranaxle than a normal axle.

I also talked to GNK about them I bet it was 12 years ago.... Pricey and the didn't like the idea of going under water and mud.

I was just going to run a normal CV boot over the sliding joint myself.
Can see me importing 4 from your side of the pond if this happens though, new 4wd buggy will need some shafts

They are very cool. I really like the spherical boot. The axles are completely sealed and plunge with ease.

Still running these? If so, how about a consumer rating.
