over the weekend was the first time I crammed 4 people in the buggy and took a lengthy ride. now I notice my rear suspension is sitting way lower than it did before. im about halfway through the suspension travel with no one in it. my question is is this normal or are my torsion bars about to break? looks like a lot of work to re-index the torsion bars if there just going to snap next time out. ive been wanting to tear the back suspension apart anayways to redo my limits and get some longer shocks but if these torsion bars are about to break maybe I need to think about some more serious upgrades.

It should pick back up after it sits for a day or so. My 4 seater does that too. I am thinking about a new set of stock size bars

Get a set of Type 3 torsion bars. They are 23 mm . Bug is 21.5. You don't have to adjust them 2 clicks , just 1 and they ride sooo smooth. Another thing to look at is where they meet in the middle. If the center torsion splines are not welded solid to the frame , just a 1/16th of rotation means a lot at the end of your wheel bearing housing. I use a 7018 welding rod to weld cast steel. But heat it up a little b4 welding. I had a buggy once that would sag even after I replaced the bars. The death weld solved it. Suspend the buggy and let the heavy back wheels hang while welding and let cool. Gussets are great. There is a reason 2 tubes run down the center of a buggy or 1 good one.

the back did pick up after a couple days but i dont like that it sags when im riding. i was wanting to get some fox air shocks and fix the problem permanately but im short on cash right now. maybe ill just index them up a bit for now. while i got it apart id like to stiffen up my arms a bit as well.

i took the torsion straight out of the beetle and welded it in the buggy so im pretty sure its all factory set.

You need to go ahead and reindex them 2 Splines at the spring plates . It will seem way too stiff until you ride it a few times then it will be just right

ok thanks guys. when I get some time ill try that. I think im gonna grind out my stops and reset my limits. anyone got any sugestions on max angle for empi cv's?

I have mine set a couple of degrees under max, because the straps where new and I expect them to stretch a bit.
930 are listed at 25 max on blind chicken but my empis don't bind till 28

NOT sure if itd the "right" way but i jack mine up from the center then adj my limit straps until my axle will move side to side freely if it is at too much angle it will lock up and not move and you will not be able to spin the wheel

Forget the 1 notch, 2 notch method. The torsion bars have a different number of splines on each end so you can achieve infinite adjustment. You may have to go up 3 on the inside, down 2 on the outside, etc. to get what you need. If you are mechanic enough to change this, get a protractor and do it right. Cut the stops or spring plates to get the CV angle you want. Personally, we used to run the Type 2's at about 20-21 degrees limit without a lot of trouble IF the joints were in good shape to start with, not already clicking. Get the stops, etc, set where you want them for the CV's. Next there are two ways to do it. You have to pre-load the spring plates against the stop with no load on the buggy to get the right setting loaded. What I have traditionally found to work on a AC buggy with stock trailing arms is 12 degrees preload, will ride just off the stops. Position the spring plate on the stop and measure the angle. Next, slip the spring plate off the stop and work with the torsion bar to get the spring plates sitting at 12 degrees more than the reading on the stop.

An alternate method is to check the buggy sitting on the ground with the approximate load you are going to ride with. Check the spring plate angle, then put a jack under the back end and raise the buggy to where you want it to ride. Check the angle difference, then block it up, pull the spring plates just off the stops, measure the angle and add the previously attained difference to it.

If you are using longer arms, you will have to add more preload as this gives the wheel more leverage on the torsion bar. Also remember, if you ride sometimes alone, with two or with four, no setting is going to be ideal for every situation. In this case, an adjustable setup will be better. For a four seater, the Type 3 bars or an aftermarket bar is definitely a good idea.

Bottom line, if you stay with torsion bars, get a protractor and at least know what you have and not be guessing one or two notch, inside or outside notch, etc. This way you know where you started, what you changed, what effect it had and about how much more change to make.

No intention to be an A hole or tell you what to do, just been down this road many times. Let your bank account and conscience fight it out over torsion vs. adjustable set up.
