What rack and pinion would you guys suggest too run it the woods? Stock ball joint beam with 16" v treads up front. I'm wanting something cheap enough that I can afford a spare but yet strong enough too run in the woods. I've looked at the Saco but with that price I couldn't afford a spare at the moment. I also intend too add power steering later down the road.

What do you guys suggest?

Look at my buggy build. I used a devil sr. Rack. 300 bucks but I don't think you will ever need a spare. It's been good so far. My bro runs a Saco and a few buddy's do to and they are hard to steer to me. I can drive mine with one finger. Drill your arms out on your spindle to a 5/8 hole and run hime joints

The devil sr is a good rack too I know a few people that run and like them.

You can get a gm rack on ebay for 65.

I had someone suggest just move the stock steering box too the center and make new tie rods. Anyone ever done this? Would it actually help with my steering and make the boxes less prone too failure?

If I do go this route, is there and certain spot that the steering joints need too be welded in or just wherever it works best?

One in center will work but 2 in center is b.a. chained together so they work together and strong

I put a gm rack on mine from advanced auto. Life time warrantee. I think it was about $75.
Check out my build. It may give you some ideals.

GM racks are wide spread racks. Not what you want as far as getting any travel out of your front end and keeping your tie rod angles right and preventing bump steer.

Saco on my orange buggy.

i used the off road econo rack on mine with international tie rods on the rack and vw on the outers for a weak link with aluminum tie rodsnote in this picture the number of NOT grade 8 bolts that holds the bottom plate on, witch holds the gear into the rack! if you go this route it is a must that you tap more holes in the rack and plate and use grade 8 bolts! i now have 20 on the bottom of my plate , cause i had the original bust out on me when i was drunk and hit a tree and walked out of the woods at 7 in the morning now next thing everyone bitches about it turning radius heres the solution there are 2 stop bolts on the bottom of the plate that control the turn radius stop point. take them out and you have about an inch more of travel space on the bottom of the plate now! but you have to take a dremel or a grinder and grind out the bottom of the plate to allow the gear to travel more! and now the spot where the bolt went thru becomes your travel stop point! lots of us use this setup but i think im the only one who did the turn radius trick ,and there is definately a noticeable difference in how far it turns.i think mine is almost 1 1/2 to left and same to the right. its cheaper imo and its bullet proof once you do this to it. you can even tap the top and put you a grease fitting on if you want! i just packed the shit out of mine at the time cause who knows!! just giving you another option!! but on the center mount stock steering box, its the only way to go if you have to use it, it puts equal pressure to the box cause of the equal ,well closer to it, than a long as tie rod. i went thru 3 boxes in one year, and at 120 or so a piece, well you know im sure this will help you or someone else that ever chooses to go this route

Not all gm racks are end mount.
The tie rods mount in the center on mine.
I made a bracket to mount the tie rods under the rack and in the center of my frame.

OK guys, I'm going to wait on R/P until I install a link pin beam next year. As for now I have both a type1 and type2 steering box. I'm considering mounting the type 2 in the center so here's too my next question.............

How do I measure and eliminate bump steer? Just want too ensure where I mount the box won't create large amounts of bump steer.
