I have put several sets of coilovers on buggys and work awesome. The springs and valving it the main key to coilovers if coilovers are in the buget I would run them. I can have a new set of kings with remote resivours shipped to your door for around 1100 ready to bolt on and ride like a dream. I have no experience with air shock so will need someone to chime in who has them. I love my coilovers and hrs and hrs of valving and spring rates I would go to nothing else since I finally have them figured out . My 2 cents

Thanks a lot for the info one more thing the coilovers I was looking at are the same price for 10 and 12 inches of travel would it be worth it to go ahead and get the 12 inch or would i not use the full potential of the shock

No you won't use all of the 12inch shock. Get 10s for your set up.

Does the beam have shock towers on it? If it does I'll be willing to bet 10" travel shocks. If not you should consider a few more factors. The front wheel travel is limited buy the tie rod sleeves in between the upper and lower frame rails. Set it up where there is about an inch or so between the sleeve and the bottom frame rail with the wheel turned away from the frame.
Stroke the arm up so the sleeves miss the upper frame rail while measuring the travel at the lower shock mount If it's more than 10" go to a 12" shock.
Like Buggybarn suggested coil-over shocks are the best once they are set up right. Most don't have the budget for them so Fox air shocks are a good second option.

I'll be making my shock towers off the frame
