What r the pros and cons of rack pinion?????

i love it except it snatches my steering wheel alot i cant figure out why

Rack and pinion tends to have the least amount of bump steer from my understanding, if mounted in the optimal location. Only downsides I am aware of are cost and powersteering add on cost. Personally I prefer the steering box setup, based on cost, strength, and ability to build it to the steering speed you desire.

I,m using a gm steering rack and i love it. I have had no problems with it so far and still as tight as the day i installed it. I did have to play with mounting location a little to correct the bumpsteer i had initialy.

How many KY buggys have you seen with rack and pinion.....

I don't know none really cuz I just got my buggy and only had it out twice

None that I can recall. I broke a stock box on mine first time out to Wellsville. One time is too often for me. Not to mention no power steering (which doesnt matter when going up hill, I know) and to many turns of the wheel to be quick steering.

But If you just want the best hill shooter you want it light. So it really depends on which is more important, climbing the meanest hills or comfort and strength. Both are great in their own rights, but build it to be driven the way you want ride. Is this a single seater or a two seater for you and a passenger? What parks will you ride mostly? Any idea who you will ride with and how they ride? All factors to help make the decisions.

You DEFINITLY DO NOT want to use this rack at Wellsville. Street or sand...ok. But Wellsville will DESTROY that little thing. Just ask Jeff Clay...lol

Two seater ill be mostly riding in wellsvile ill be riding with wonnabuggy and giveitagallon so what would be my best option cuz last weekend my tie rod got bent so I was just sorta trying to look for something stronger then stock??

I would strongly recomend asking giveitagallon what his thoughts are based on who he rides with. Personally I wouldnt re-do the steering for a 2 seater at wellsville without power steering. Too many rocky twisty downhill trails to not have it. Now as to a rack or a steering box (like a gm truck) it is hard to say. But either way get it centered on your beam for the least amount of bump steer.

go saco rack with himes ridding up their or like alot of our places down here a stock box will need to be replaced after a year and the rack has been on my buggy for 5 or more and still like new and those trw stock boxes are like 100 bucks or so and replacing one every year sucks

i put an H D rack on my woods buggy about 4 years ago...still tight even with big 7.75 3 ribs on it...used international ends on rack and bug on outer...no probs even with bug outers...its been to d n k once,harlan a few times,haspin 100 times,wheelers,bug farm 100 times, etc and only thing i dont like is backing up it will rough you up a bit

I know.....I wish i could have ONE vehicle that done it all. I've made several attempts but still have not managed to create one.

Roger, that has been my goal on mine as I keep adding mods to it. All in all it does pretty good and other then the stock 6 rib being a weak link it has held up great the last two years. Now that being said, it wont win an A-class hill or climb the extreme hills the single seaters do. But not the type of riding I like to do anyways. Now if my daughters buggy turns out like I hope it should be a stronger more capable buggy then mine, and at a lower cost.

Doofy come down And steer the rack on the new buggy it is ten times harder to steer then a jeep Cherokee gearbox and the jeep box cost 15 bucks at pull apart ! When I ran the box I looped the power steering lines and took to jeep front steering set ups to make the Buggy steering and I loved it !

Jay im just trying to find a stronger steering or better then the stock tie rods that's all so if u have any input let me know what u think

Or which route to take and with the front end too I want lift it a little bit at least

if you dont wanna spend lots of money and have fab skill then go with a box off like a s10 or something they will hold up forever too or whatever car or truck everyone suggest and as far as the more ground clearance go with longer arms on the front

Its a good thing that guys like us get just as much enjoyment out of building and modifying these machines we build.....Lord know we spend more time working on them then riding......
