my name, you guessed it: Eric P. been a member on Pirate4x4 (alot nicer here) for a while. i love the outdoors and love 4wheelin. used to ride/work on atvs, but never had a 4wd truck. finally got a jeep (brand new) but didn't want to wheel it - was my dd! its been gone for a while, now, and i attended a rock race, at Wheelin in the Country, about a year ago. after trading into a Samurai project and realizing im not a suspension guru, i'm looking for a buggy. i may be looking for opinions about possible trades, so stay tuned for updates (hopefully).

thanks for any leads. i will be trying to negotiate a straight-up trade! been working 6/7 days a week, but should be slowing down as weather cools. i'll be able to hunt down some leads, after work slows. i'm not afraid to travel for a trade! been searching c-list alot and found some nice buggys. i have two projects that i will be dealing with 1: Samurai (low dollar) needs f/r suspension 2: Pro-Street Chopper (high dollar) about $2k to finish. we'll see what goes first but both are on the chopping block!

Welcome to the site. When you are ready to buy a buggy, make sure you post it here 1st. Someone will usually know the history of the buggy and can make sure you do not buy a lemon.

first buggy hopeful #1. contacted owner with trade offer and he is talking favorable. my intended use would be 75%trails/25%road. i live 5 miles from Wheelin in the Country and Wooly's Offroad is about 35 minutes away. this will not be a hardcore hill climber but i do want a safe buggy. if i roll, i would like to know the frame will hold strong. although its a nice looking buggy, does it have enough bracing for a roll? it doesn't have tree bars- will i regret not having them? any thoughts/opinions are appreciated.

I couldn't make it ten minutes in the woods with out tree bars, but a lot of the bama guys don't find them necessary

thanks for the replies. i should be getting more info, i'll post as it arrives. would the alum. front-end be a deal breaker? do they wear out quicker or just bend/damage easier?

Buggy also has boxed aluminum trailing arms, also. With concerns about the front, does the same go for the rear or would tree bars suffice? Any more thoughts on the aluminum front in the woods? The bracing and bars aren't huge, but I don't want bust the front first tree I rub!

Just depends on your driving style really, I'm sure the alum parts are stronger than stock bug parts and plenty of buggies still run 40+ year old beàms and arms. IMO

first off welcome to the site.
i would wonder about the front beam and the trailing arms holding up to rough country or hills, but as for the buggy you got all you need good size engine good tranny. of course X bracing up front and behind the seats and maybe corner bracing in the roof if there isn't any. but its all about how you want to set it up.

You will find that with any real off road riding the aluminum shock towers will remove themselves, if not riding the the first roll down the hill will. it looks like a high jumper frame, not exactly the strongest from the factory but with a little fab work and some welding you should get plenty of enjoyment. I wouldnt stress about the aluminum beam as they bolt in and you can always cut them off and build shock towers on the frame (just don't make them 3'-0 tall like HP jk). Welcome to the fray all kinds of great people on this site. Been in the sport for almost 38 years and they are the best I have found

Never seen aluminum rear arms except for the Porsche arms flipped .
A stock beams is way stronger the that aluminum front beam . They break at the grub bolts in the center .

Could I buy a new beam and use the arms and steering from the aluminum one? I'm leaning towards getting it, just to get started but would like a different beam!

You can as long as you stay with a stock width. The rack in the picture is also a concern it's more designed for sand

That would be a bugpack frame dans performance sales them good frames and the buggy looks well put together it would be nice for what your wanting and if the aluminum stuff bends its nothing to just buy a stock beam for 75bucks and bolt on also it could be made a good climber with some diffrent tires and a few adjustments and just brace it behind the seats with a x brace and one in the side area where you get in amd out I will post picks of mine to give you a idea its basicly same frame

Thanks for that info, jesse. I may be making a trade Saturday! If so, I'll be hitting you up for more details on that bracing. Wanted to thank everyone for their input/info, it's helped a lot!

Seems to sum up my buggy experience!

Build a buggy with the best of everything and then commence trying to beat it in to submission :o . I need to buy some Mad Mikes parts that have been properly tested by Brad. Then maybe I will have a set of trailing arms that will not bend. I really need a bomb proof beam gone through three in the past five years.
