Quote: after reading posts here and hillaholics post at the samba http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=354795 i've decided to do it in 11/2 .120 dom 15/8 would be nice but i dont have the die's for the bender I have a nice bender with 1 5/8 dies if you want to borrow them, I live in BrookPark, right by the 71 snow road exit so let me know. im glad you decided to go with heavier tubing, thats a smart move. in my other post when i said i bent up my frame in that roll over, that was when i had wimpy ass frame with 1 1/2" .095 wall tubing. |

Wimpy ass buggy???? Now that aint nice . But its funny! Build ya one out of 2" solid if it makes you feel better, I like the view from the hillTOPS so I'll keep my "wimpy ass 1 1/2 .095" that is braced correctly.. Since I gotta climb in second gear, I aint got enough power to push that big pipe all the way up there. |

I'll admit, mine weighs a little bit more than some of the other ones. But most of the time, I have the kids in the passenger seat and I worry about them. So I guess the little bit of weight is worth it to me. |

This is friends car. Check out bars from windshield down. I know this car is much shorter than yours but it has been rolled at least a dozen times when it was together. He loves them and says it keep branches out of his face also. This car has been down for about 5 yrs. Were putting it back together now. Just added an x brace behind seats,x-ed the roof, added a diaginol bar to bar behind seat and putting some bodywork on. |

Holly Bracing Batman..... That is a lot of steel... I think that should hold up fine in a roll... Look forward to following the build. You should start a thread so we can follow the progress. |

Mickey mouse. If he starts to put real effort in it i will start a thread. It took him all winter to add the tubing you see. He bought another real basic buggy and t trailer for 1500.00 and has been putting around in it. Here is another friends car. Mostly sees street use but extra bars next to seats make you feel real safe. |

afterburnt wrote: Why does everybody keep using that 1 1/2" .095 wall tubing? You don't see NASCAR, NHRA, IHRA or any other motor sport using that light of a tubing. I think that stuff was only made for recreational sand buggies. We do some hard core riding and climbing, so personally, I want every bit of strength in my roll cage that I can possibly get. My whole frame is made out of 1 5/8" .120 wall dom tubing. I had a roll over quite a few years back and it was unbelievable how I saw my roll cage bend. But it was nothing like Bill's rollover. I've seen people use gas pipe, fence pipe, and even electrical conduit on their roll cages. I think the best way to strengthen a roll cage is to start off with heavier, stronger tubing. I was struck offset head on with another woodsbuggy 30 years ago and I still have spine problems. The other buggy took off my drivers side wheels and bent the side bars in on my pelvis. It cracked my pelvis which never ever heals back to "normal" strength. |

kyjr.buggy1 wrote: Well it's relieving me seeing everybody brace up their roofs. I hate seeing people when we go riding that have no bracing on their roof. I think it's insane to have any kind of buggy without at least having x-bracing in it. just my two cents. -Dakotah/koko Good advice! I would also like to add that there should also be shielding from falling branches. Sooner or later woods buggies bump into a standing tree. Some of those trees have dead branches and tops. When you strike small diameter trees (1 ft. dia. or less) with dead tops, the top breaks off and spears your passenger compartment! It is UGLY! |
