need lil help guys,i run a 2180 and #3 isnt running at all at idle but will if in the gas a lil, i have NEW 44 webers and first thought maybe carb prob,i have went through carb completely i have fire and i have fuel and air i checked for manifold leaks with ether but dont seem to have a leak, i checked compression and #3 is 90 #4 is 120 #1 is 110 and #4 is 120. last year i had a compression ring broke on #3 and when i pulled the piston the ring fell apart,i couldnt feel or see any damage so i re rung #3and#4 last year.do you guys have any ideas or opinions that im not thinking of or maybe overlooking? or should i bite the bullet and buy new pistions and cylinders??? |

I wonder if you got a crack in your head between the valves |

Remember, to lite off fuel with low compression you need a good hot spark. Too much fuel not getting burned, washes the oil out of your rings and looses compression. Also fowls plugs and wears cylinders and rings.Go fuel inj. w/c that loves 93 octane. |

OR....go MSD on your ac and get 6 sparks per revolution (below 3000rpm) that are all hotter than most OEM wc sparks available. Anyways, back to your question. Are you 110% sure there is no junk in your idle circuit (not just the jet, the whole circuit)?? If so, you didnt mention pullin that sparkplug. DD is right by saying that plug could be compromised after riding a while with a problem in that cylinder. If neither of those are it,the cracked head theory could very likely be it. Might wanna check that cylinder for roundness , too. Sometimes they are egged when you get them brand new. (I think that is whats going on with Koko's motor right now. Pull the cylinder and hone it lightly and see if the hone skips any spots). Even Cima/Mahle sells us some junk sometimes any more. |

I think it may all be in the carbs, the idle jets take care of the range from idle all the way to around 3500 rpm then the mains take over, it is very important that they stay cleaned out, here's how the idles work with the mains...@=idles #=mains 1000 rpm @@@@ 2000 rpm @@@# 3000 rpm @@## 4000 rpm @### 5000 rpm #### You can see that the idles is almost completely phased out around 3500 rpm, that's why it runs when you give it gas, but not run at idle. Anytime you put on new or rebuilt set of carbs, it will always have idle circuit problems until it get all the way cleaned out, I don't care if you rebuilt them and put them on the buggy in the operating room because of the clean environment, it will do it and once its cleaned out, no more problems again. You will also need a synchronizer to check and see if both cylinders is pulling the same amount of air as well, if not, you may have a broken pushrod cup on your rockers or just out of adjustment or a broken rocker shaft block. Let us know what you find out. |

If it was mine the first things Id try is clean the idle jet then swap the plug then the wire. If the problem persists Id dig deeper. Id check the dist. cap for corrosion of the terminal too. |

Blast that thing with air. I had my fuel lione come apart on the inside and clog my carbs. I had to blast air through the mixture holes, idle holes and main holes to get them unblocked. |

Bmoore, Like Dad said, I think it's probably somehting in your idle circuit. That day down there at Stony when your buggy was running like crap and we cleaned the idle jets out, I got a big turd out of the idle jet that goes to the number 3 cylinder. I'm having the same exact problem, just on the number one cylinder. Make sure you clean out the idle circuit as best as you possibly can, it may be the whole problem. -Dakotah/koko |

i just found the problem guys, the brass machined part that goes in the carb that the air mixture screw and needle seats in was stuck on the mixture screw from factory i guess? i removed it from the screw and reinserted it in my carb and gently seated it with a punch. put it back together and fired her up and she is screaming on all 4 now!!! thanks to all for the input and help!!!! |
