 Post subject: timing type 1

the other day i bought a boshee 009 with electronics to replace the stock distributor. i got a hanynes and it said to get TDC on cylinder 1 and have the flywheel markings line up with the case. okay easy did that. then i put the distirbutor in and thats when i was lost. i dunno how i need to set the distributor in the hole. when i did put it in the whole , exactly how the old one was , i tried starting and i got a nice little flame out the exhaust.? preigniton? wtf am i doin wrong

the dist has a offset on the bottom of it.make sure its in correctly and all the way down.then put #1 cylinder on tdc on the exhaust stroke.remove the plug and when the piston comes up it will push air out the plug hole.then put your rotor button on and align your cap up on thr number 1 cylinder plug wire with the rotor button.should be in time close here.sounds like your 180 out.chad :mrgreen:

top dead center on #1 the rotor will point at the alt. pulley that is where you want it to drop in. Usually you want to open the gap up on your plugs a little when going from a points type to an electronic distributor.

It sounds like that the plug wires are out of order, the number 1 position on the rotor button can point anywhere depending on how the engine is built. The firing order should be 1-4-3-2 clockwise, like Gasman said you just need to take the #1 plug out and bump the starter until it blows your finger off of the hole then you're pretty close to finding the #1 compression stroke and also look on your engine pulley and see if it has any timing marks then use a wrench to turn the nut on the pulley until it lines up with the mark on the TDC position. If it does not have any marks at all, use a long, phillips screwdriver and put it inside the hole where the plug goes and turn the pulley with a wrench until you "feel" that you think you are on the TDC position and then look at your rotor button to see where its pointing at and then make sure your firing order is correct, don't forget to mark your pulley once you get it TDC first if you don't have one so you can use a timing light to set your proper total timing set. That should get you pretty close to getting that engine figured out. I recommend to use a timing light that has a tach and degree control built into it like this one.......http://www.jegs.com/i/Equus/390/3568/10002/-1 This is a very nice timing light, you can set the degrees on whatever it supposed to be set at and it will line up with your true TDC mark, if not, you can adjust the distributor to where it needs to be then you good to go, the tach also plays a role into setting the timing as well so you can see how high you're revving the engine without going too high as well.

thanks for all the repllys. so i can just take the rotor completly out, find top dead center on #1 cylinder. then place the distributor back in. that would be a close static timing until i get a timing light correct? then il prob check all my plug wires. does anyone have a diagram which wires go on the distributor cap and to the plug ends? make it whole lot easyer. il prop get to it maybe tomrrow or this weekend pretty bust with school. but again thanks for the help

No, you don't have to take the rotor button out, just leave the cap off so you can turn the rotor button to help line up the off-set notch on the bottom of the distributor to seat it in properly. Once you verify that you got the distributor in, then go to the last instructions on the other post I left for you to get the correct timing mark, there is no mark on most distributor caps to tell you where #1 is....you will have to mark the cap yourself when you get it set properly that way you will know where its at for future reference. Usually the plug wires on the VW engines have a long end straight boot on one end and a 90 degree boot on the other end, the long straight boot end end goes on the spark plugs and the 90 degree boot end goes on the distributor cap.

The crank makes 2 revolutions to make one firing sequence. So your piston will be at TDC twice during the cycle, (2 strokes up/ 2 strokes down= 4cycle) How ever through the gear reduction of the distributor drive and gear, the distributor only turns once. The tangs on the bottom of the distributor are off set from center and will only clock in one way, (unless you removed the distibuor drive gear, things should be fine).
#1 on distributor is closest to the pulley. Then reading clock wise 4-3-2. Cylinders from front to rear, right side 1then 2. Left side front to rear 3 & 4.
