34pict solex , duel port 1600, I have adjusted the carb using the instructions found here http://www.vw-resource.com/34pict3.html. My idle cut off has been cliped so I know that is not the problem, I have also loosened the idle jet but no luck. Cleaned idle jet and blew air through hole, not much gas came through to the top of the carb when I did this. Could this be stopped up or is there anything else I am missing.

Thanks

Have you checked for intake air leaks, especially around the rubber boots and where the intake bolts onto the head? Hold the carb open enough to keep it runnin, then spray startin fluid around these areas and see if it revs up a little.

I dont know exactly which carbs came with this but does yours have a solenoid screwed into it that has a spade to connect a wire to? This was some type of anti run on band aid. It wont idle if this solenoid isnt powered up or I just grind the tip off & screw it back in which solves the problem.

My bad. I wasnt sure what he referred to. Im used to everyone calling it an anti dieseling solenoid.

I know it shuts the fuel flow off when you turn the key off so you are right. A buddy of mine was stationed in Germany 25 years ago & he did side work on bugs. Hes the one who first explained that part to me & in the part stores there it was called an anti dieseling solenoid. I think we are both right but I need to read more carefully next time before I post.

I tore the engine down a few months ago when I started rebuilding my buggy. I didnt notice any tears on the boots or anything. Dont know if i mentioned it or not but #1 cylinder didnt seem to be fireing yesterday. I could hold the exhaust pipe on #1 but all others were very hot. I tightened the exhaust pipes as they were a little loose. I will try the starting fluid in the areas mentioned and see if that helps.

Engine seems like it idles for a few seconds and starts dying off. I loosened the idle fuel mixture and it seems to rev higher for the second or 2 when i crank it and then it dies off again. Could this be in any way a fuel pump problem? If the fule pump is worn and not pumping good at low rpm then the fuel would keep dying off. (I have the mechanical pump)
