Post subject:  sheared 4 dowell crank repairing ??

i saw at the buggy shop a kit to redrill the four dowells on the crank , i have a engine i was gonna put together for my buddy and the four pins are sheared my questions 1. do you have to dismantle engine to drill 2. do you use a different locaction for holes 3 is it worth the $40 bucks any help would be great !!! thanks jason

NO, YES, YES. I did it without the fixture on an engine 1 time and put in the oversized pins in the bad holes. Then used stock pins in the new holes. Thanks Dave T

The best way to fix a 4 dowel crank is
step 1 remove the motor from car ,remove exhaust,fan,alt,valve covers, heads,cylinders,pistons then split the case .take rods off the crank in question then remember this step it is the most important Throw the crank away

Crankshaft can be fixed as long as you are not making a lot of horsepower it will be fine. If you have ANY performance upgrades I would not consider repairing the crank no matter what. Get a different one. 4 dowel crankshafts are a dime a dozen. You can probably get a good one for the price of that fixture.

That's why when I ran a VW i used a wedge mated crank

I think the jig you saw was for turnning a 4 dowel crank into an 8 dowel crank. But I agree with the above statements. Also look at the dowel holes in fly wheel, I'll bet they're Franked too. ( there's a lot of good stories about Frank, It's amazing he lived as long as he did)
