I have the chance to trade into a baja with a 914 2.0 with baby dels. and a bus 3rib the owner say it runs real strong.
I am in the process of building my buggy and already have a 1979 bus 2.0 motor with a single carb that I heard run for just a minuite and I think it is good but not sure. Also have the 6rib that I had a super diff installed to go in the buggy.
My ouestion is, is the 914 2.0 motor a better motor? and will I have to do anything extra to hook it up to my bus 6rib trans?
Any insight would be appreciated.

About the only real difference is if it is a true 1914 engine it has a built in windage tray and better heads.
Most all the parts interchange or can be made to interchange so identifying is critical. The bus was built for bottom end torque and the lighter more areodynamic Porsche was built for more HP at a higher rpm.
(Some of these engines were not sold in the USA)

Progress is a little slow now waiting on more parts and money for parts. Got the frame painted and all the diamond plate pans and roof on but thats it untill next week. I am going to pick up tires,wheels,hubs and other parts this week end. I am holding out for CNC single pedel duil master cyl brake pedel and cnc clutch pedel and gas pedel and cutting brakes. Also want rear disks. I figure that will be about $1000 that I don,t have yet.
I did buy a german super diff and had it installed so the 6 rib is ready to be painted and installed.
Thanks for your brake down on the 914 motor. But I am a little confused your stats show the 914 having more horse power at lower rpm's than the vw but you said the bus motor was built for low end grunt dosen't more HP at lower RPM's mean mor low end grunt??
I guss I need to check the engine code to see what it is.
This is a hard deal to pass up 1 74 baja with 3 rib, saway axels, and 914 motor with baby dells. new super swamper rear tires ,suspention seats ,new gagues, new wiring, and other parts . Also a rail buggy with a blown up motor and a second 2.0 motor that needs bearrings.
All for trade of a Kimber custom 45, shoulder holster,4 mags, and a knife, and $500 to boot.
I would have about $1600 in the trade.
He says the motor is strong . He dosen't think the carbs are adjusted right but it will burn the tires in 1st-3rd gear. He is 3 hours away so I haven't seen it yet . Might be BS?

Sorry went back and red again and the vw did show lower RPM's but about 27-35 less HP for only 3-400 more RPM's. Dose the lower RPM's make that much diffrence.
Can the 914 motor be changed for more grunt at lower RPM's??

It probably won't matter that much since you have lower gearing. If it runs well the 914 would be worth getting, even if just for a spare. The part # for the head is cast in visable below the rocker shafts and the three bolt intake. Check out the case prefixes.

Well, I don't know anything about the gun, but if I had the chance to do what you've got, I would be all over it. The 2.0 porsche had the heads and pop up pistons to bring the compression up. Thanks Dave(playin' with a 1.7 bus) T

If I had a buck for every T-4 engine sold as a Porsche, 1600 sold as a 1835 and 1835 sold as a 2180 I could build a fleet of LS1 powered chain drive rails for each family member. $20 says it is not a Porsche engine.

Yup. "just rebuilt"== a new coat of paint and some chrome tins.. Get the engine code and look for the 3 bolt intake heads. The measure the intake and exhaust valves.. Thanks Dave T

Well you all were right it is NOT a 914 motor so no money with the trade just the gun. If the motor checks out to be good I think it is still a good deal.

i used to throw them away ,now i drag them from where i can.had 1700 with progressive then 36drl"s great with 009 and 3rib,now have 2litre with 6 rib msd,dells,hyabusa headers and upright cooling...ect.turboblue is overhauling a garrett t3 and holley390 for more gitty-up.the big clutch and heavy flywheel give great manners for all driving and added power steering makes it nimble.i always look for 3 bolt heads and oil temp sender on bottom right corner for porche.any person that gets switched to a big block working well won't be disappointed or working on the motor every week.i went through the hurdels and its not that hard if you no were you want to end up.give me e-mail address and i"ll show you ...richard
