Post subject:  Crank movement.
With my flywheel off I can stick a long extension in the crank and move the crank up a little. It won’t move side to side just up. Is this ok with no flywheel?

You are supposed to have around .002 to .003 clearance. Is the main bearing moving up and down? Are you sure you are not being fooled by the crank moving back and forth at the same time you are lifting up. If the bearing does not seem to move in the case I would put the flywheel back on and use a dial indicator to see how much the crankshaft moves up before dissasembling to measure crank to bearing or bearing to case clearances.

If there is enough that you can feel it I suspect you have a problem. Like perrib said .002/.003 is about all you should have. How is your oil pressure when the engine is warm?

Just curious, what made you check that?

It is defiantly more than .002-.003 more like .125. I will do what perrib said and check the movement with the flywheel on and a dial indicator. The reason I checked it is for the small oil leak I have. My buddy’s motor kept eating rear main seals. He found out the case was shot and the crank was moving so much it kept chewing up the rear main.

Oil pressure is good. Warm 10-20 idling 50-60 revved up.

BTW it supposedly has an 84mm roller crank if that means anything.

Typically it means Needle bearings on the rod jornals instead of the standard 2 piece babbit style

Which is something Porsche tried in the 60's with very little success. :oops:

There were some roller VW cranks made but I don't recall ever seeing one in a 84mm stroke. There weren't very many rollers made at all and I seriously doubt that is what you have. Most became boat anchors in the early 80's.

I believe SPG sells roller cranks.they are 2 piece,pressed and bolted together.suppose to be 4 high rpm use.side stepping clutch a no no! crank will twist.not recommended 4 hillaholic! :mrgreen: everyone else OK....LOL

It's not a roller crank it looks like a full circle welded crank. See the pictures in my new post

seen a bunch of roller cranks back around 1986,87,88 buddy put alot of money into this thing.rode it about half hour on a trail ride,got to this 100x300 concrete pad out in the middle of old strip job use to be a supply house,and back then we use to do laps on it had a blast out there but any ways he made about 3 laps real easy and then he got on it hard,pulled the cutting brake layed the fuel to it to spin around the end and pow.broke the crank in half,piece of crap.after watching you at wellsville there is no way that you have this same crank,every person that got suckered into buying this crank (at least around here)broke it either in half or in a rod journal.havent seen or herd of one in a long time they me have fixed this problem.chad :mrgreen:
