How much extra oil should be added with a 96plate oil cooler, oil filter and 5’ of ½” line?

Are you running a dry-sump system?

i'd start with filling the filter which will be almost 1qt....then 3qt to the motor....start it let it warm up a few minutes at idle then pull the dipstick as soon as you turn it off and check it...fill to line it will always sit high on the stick cold.

I just had an experience with running my oil level a little too high..It whipped air into the oil and a lifter got a little noisy. There is a fine line between just right and too high. Plus ;putting one quart of Lucas to get to the right level helps.

I added 1 extra quart and checked the oil just after I shut it off. It was 1/4” below the full line. Last season I had 2 extra quarts and oil always dripped out the breather box, but that might have been from rolling it  I cleaned out the foam in the breather box and it was drenched with oil. I’m going to add ½ quart more and call it good.

This is what I was thinking
3 quarts for the motor
1 quart for the filter
2 quarts for the oil cooler
At least 1 quart for the 5’ of oil line

That totals 7 quarts. I think that’s way too much and would cause problems on start up and idle. I never had lower oil pressure than 20psi on a hot day at idle.

That’s why I asked, thanks for the answers.

I'm with rock on this one. The oil cooler and lines do not add that much. If you really want to know how much they hold disconnect the lines from the motor and fill them up then drain it back out into a large measuring cup or milk jug.

Start with about 3.75 quarts. 1/4 inch above the full line does not seem to hurt. The coolers don't hold much. I have the dog house cooler and two 96 plate coolers. With the dual filter mount holding Mahle Vanogon 2.5 liter oil filters I can get close to six quarts. The filters hold a good quart each.
I also use a windage tray.

I run a DDS dry sump on my dual carb engine. Now that CB has a two stage pump for $99.00 it is very cost effective. They do want $99 for their crank pulley but I think a regular power pulley could be trimmed down 1/4 inch and use a 912 Porsche gen/alt. pulley.
