I have this on my site for VW sedans but it mostly applies to off road engines as well.

That tells it all. If you don't use Lucas oil make sure you use one for flat tappet cams. I only lost on set of lifters and one cam and it was when the oil was reformulated and many people learned about the consequences the hard way. If you don't have an oil filter install one before you start it up. Enjoy your new engine.

we use rotella t, a semi oil. we use it just for the start up. Engle told us to use it to break in the cam.

I use Rotella 15w-40 in mine all the time. Luckily I have a friend who works in the formulation dept. for Valvoline, he told me that rotella has the highest levels of ZDDP in oil that is commonly available. He said unless you want to special order your oil Rotella is the best for a VW engine. He was a dumbass in high school so I guess he has to be right, right?

i used valvoline 10-40 and put in a zinc additive. started it yesterday broke in the cam and ran it 4 a little while. ran it again tonight after some adjustments 2 the carb and timing.ill probable run it again tomorrow and then change the oil. ill use valvoline again with the zinc additive but on the next oil change i will go back 2 castrol 20-50

took it 2 d &k Easter weekend 4 its first reall test. it done better than i expected.some carb adjustments r still in its future but was very happy with it. had a great time down there good times good people. got 2 say thanks 2 Tim at Southern Bug, it probably would of never made it to the woods with out his help. and the guy that stopped and gave me the bolt i needed when i sheered mine off the steering shaft on the way out. would of had a hard time getting back with my steering wheel just flopping in circles. lol
