i covered my buggy up for the winter and left the vent closed on the gas tank and from the pressure build up it filled the block up! now i had a problem when i had my motor built with the carb causing this to happen and dealt with that but i'm pretty sure this was the pressure cause when i took the cap off it was like a pressure blaster, but this time the gas sat in there for like 3 months or so, will it affect anything? such as seals or what not? |

Well It is certainly not good for the motor and oil seals however I would not be to concerned. Let the oil and and gas drain out . If you have an external oil filter and/or cooler bypass them. You may want to remove the valve covers also. Refill with cheap oil to normal level. Remove spark plugs and your oil sending unit (gas will leave the block thru it) and crank it over to remove the gas from the oil pump and passages. You may want to run a temperary line from the open port so the oil and gas does not go every were. Depending on how much gas is in the motor you will have a lot come out of the cylinders too, so dont stand in front of them lol. Once your satisfied with that then replace the oil sending unit and start the motor and let it Idel until it gets to operating temperature. Drain the oil and put fresh good oil in it and run it again. Smell the oil after your done to make sure you have removed all of the gas. If not replace the oil again and start over. $50.00 in oil is a lot cheaper than a motor rebuild. One more thing if you have a fuel petcock turn it off when your not using the buggy. If you dont have one get one, you need it. |

you wouldn't think that could build that much pressure. is your tank higher than carb.i had a fuel pump go bad and let gas in my block once.i left the drain cock valve on the tank open and it filled my block up.if you pull the plugs and crank it, make sure your coil is unhooked and out of the way.seen a mustang bout burn to the ground because of that.sad thing about that is it was me that done it.lol

There was an episode of "Cops" a month or so ago that had a guy working on his friend's VW bus in the garage. He had a small fuel leak and took the coil wire off. However, he didnt make sure that it wouldn't spark. He cranked it, coil sparked, bus burned to the ground along with the garage and most of the house. The guy working on it was so distraught that the cops were called to calm him down. |

Don't worry Vws are tough. I agree Odyknuck with draining it out. Filling it up ,pulling the plugs cranking it with the power to the coil disconnected to get oil pressure and clear the cylinders. Squirt a little Mystery oil in each hole and crank it again. . Run it til it the oil gets hot and drain it out. I use Stabil fuel stabilizer for fuel. Stabil also is great for the lawnmower, chain saw, weedeater and hedge trimmer. |
