Post subject:  Dry sump
Roy or anybody with a CB Dry sump. I purchased this sump and power pulley from CB, I put the pulley on today and it hits the sump. Did any of you guy's have this same problem? If so what did you do to fix it?

I had the same problem. I ended up machining the upper flange area of the pump cover and the backside of the pulley until they cleared each other. Makes it a pain to change the belt, but I've had it that way for 2 years now, with no problem.
I just found out while Tim was helping me build my wife's 2276 a couple months ago that there is actually ANOTHER size pulley designed for those dry sump pumps that is an even smaller diameter. Thats what I put on her motor. The people at CB should of told you about that, just like they should've told me!
I believe using the larger power pulley and machining the parts for clearance is actually better, though, if you wanna go thru the trouble. The larger pulley should turn the fan and alternator a little faster. I just used a 3" disc on an angle grinder and CAREFULLY machined the upper "Indent" at the top of the pump cover to where it was about 1/8" thick. Then I grinded off the back edge of the pulley until there was enough clearance. Kinda sucked taking a grinder to those brand new parts, though :evil:. But it worked fine!
I aint sayin' you SHOULD do this, I'm just tellin' what I did because I didnt want to wait for a new pulley. Already had everything else and wanted to hear it run! :lol:

For as much expensive stuff that I had to grind and cut just to get the motor together, that don't bother me. I had thought of that, but was concerned about the pulley being off balance. Won't that screw up the harmonics of the motor? Or being that is light (aluminum) it won't make a noticable difference?

I used a differant type of shim kit when i installed my pulley.It was two spacers about 1/8",one for alt and one for the crank.Then i machined the back of my power pulley.I did not touch my oil pump.So i can replace my belt without any problems.

If you guys are using power pulleys you are slowing the fan/charging system down nearly 20%.

I have used T-3 generator pulleys up top in the past to speed the fan back up.
They are smaller on the OD and will get the drive/driven pulley ratio closer to what it is stock.

Now I use these on dry sump engines:

BMD sells that kit, I am one of their dealers.

I get $240 for the kit, I cover the shipping in the lower 48.
I supply the sand seal too.
They sell them for $210 on their website but you have to pay the shipping and they don't come with the sand seal.
About a wash actually....... 8)

It's the schnitz for dry sump systems..........
Only thing you have to do is change the two rear

Does it clear the CB Performance pump? I know you have to be familiar with that pump.
If it does clear, is the seal a knock in seal or machine in?

Yeah it clears fine Roy.
The seal is a bolt in version.
They will machine the steel sleeve to any size seal you choose but the default size is 1.770".

I like these kits over spacing out and machining the backside of a power pulley.
I've had to do that before these serpentine systems came along.

This is a power pulley and a CB dry sump pump.
It clears by a whisker after I put in a space and machined the backside.
Little close but it did clear.
I hate to put more than 1 spacer in as the drive area gets shorter and less engagement of the pulley woodruff key.

Then you have to worry about getting the fan speed back to where it needs to be.
CB's little pulley is just too small to suit me.
I tractor around at low speed in the woods, I'd imagine my stuff would start cooking in short order...... :eek:

I just got my new pulley system from Gary at Davis Racing. (Turboblue)

I must say that this stuff is top quality stuff and I love it. I am very happy with it. The most important thing of all is now my fan speed is back to where it needs to be. It has always bothered me that I was running an underdrive pulley. Anyone running a dry sump pump should look into this product.Image

Forgot to tell you guys using the BMD system to put a drop of locktite on the top pulley nut.

I use lots of Locktite when I work on my buggy. I hate things coming loose.
