I would imagine you will get different answers on this one. What are you considering an "041" head? It sticks in my mind that the original 041 castings from VW had a 39mm intake with a 32mm exhaust. Is this what you're thinking of? Most of the people I know feel the intake is a little too big for the exhaust. There are a lot more people I know running 40mm x 35.5mm "044" heads than the 39 x 32 combo. If you can get the 041 heads inexpensively, try them. They'll probably give you a little more power than a stock head.

041 castings are ok if you can get them cheap. I would not buy a new set of them if I had the choice. They are prone to cracking between the valve seats.

100.00 for a set of used

When I built my 2165 I ran set of those that I hand ported. They ran well. I replaced them with a set of 044s the following season. The ported 041s actually had more low end torque than the CB 044s however the 044s had a better top end.

Check them closely for cracks. If they are good, that would be a great buy. Especially if someone has gone in the ports and blended them and did a clean up job already.
