Hey, I am new to this buggy stuff and have a 1641cc buggy that me and my friend share. I have the chance to get a porsche 914 with a type 4 2.0l engine with 30,000 miles on it for under $500. But I am hesitant, because I have been researching and rarely see type 4s in buggies PLUS the engine hasnt been ran in 5 years. This money either goes to this 914, or rebuilding the 1641cc. Any advice?

Thanks,
Mike D.

The bad things are (among others) they are EXPENSIVE to rebuild and the exhaust is a pain to deal with.

Good thing is they are pretty strong (torquey, but rpm's arent quick) in stock form compared to a stock type 1 and , if you have the cake, you can make some big power with them in a performance build.

chainrail, whats a ballpark dollar figure on building a type 4. i'm currently running a 2165 w/6rib. will type 4 bolt right up? what about the fan housing and exhaust, is there a good aftermarket?

a six rib was built for use with a type 4. the bus is a type 2 but the engine is a type 4 (73 or 74 and up anyway)

[quote='Chaindrive Rail']No disrespect to Larry but, I could go on for hours why a type IV is better than a type I, but I won't. The type IV is really not any more expensive than a type I. They just don't make the same cheap parts for the type IV as they do the type I. So, if you open a magazine and compare prices on the two engines the type IV seems more expensive. We wont use cheap parts in a rebuild so the cost comes out about the same for each engine. You can also easily build up to a 3120
