Is it back firing through the carb or exhaust? Could your valves be out of adjustmaent?

I give up, I am at a loose as to why this thing is back firing on me. I have checked the carbs and cleaned the jets and everything that I know to look at without disassembly. Going riding in the morning and it is driving me insane. What could be causing this thing to back fire and throw flames out the pipe ever so often. It isn't a constant just every 30 seconds to a minute it will pop then it will back fire sounding like a gun going off. Somebody help please ready to pull my hair out. The Wild Kids |

Its backfiring through the exhaust. I will check my valves in the morning. Its 11:30 now and I'm tired. I know it is on the left side thats doing it after thinking about it. Thanks I didn't think about the valves just assumed it was the carbs. The Wild Kids |

i have had that happen, turned out to be corrision in my dist. cap. cleaned it up with some sandcloth. it drove me crazy, played with the carbs and adjusted the valves, spent hours trying to figure it out. |

This has also happened to me and other friends. My situation was a cracked head, right around the spark plug area. My buddy's were, one, was leaking around the cylinder area where it met the head. We ended up putting copper gaskets between the heads and cylinders. The second was it was sucking air between the intake and the head, bad intake gasket. If the motor is sucking more air than fuel in a cylinder it usually pops out the exaust. The way I check these areas is I use carb cleaner and spray around the intake area, spark plug area and the head/cylinder area while is't running and listen for variations in the engine idle. If it fluctuates (begins to stall) you have a leak in the area you just sprayed. Hopefully it's not any of these. Good luck. Dave |

Just got back from a fun weekend and more laughs than a fellow should have. Found the problem and it was so stupid on my part. It was gas my whole problem was gas. I had grabbed 87 instead of 93 when I got gas. readjusted the carbs to run the 87. Just fine tuning is all it took. Ran like a scolded dog all weekend and no problems at all no more back firing, popping noises to drive me insane. Thanks everyone. The Wild Kids |

Glad to hear you figures it out. Man I want to go on a ride. I did get the day off because the job on the turnpike went quicker than expected, but now getting ready to go to Indiana. I hope that goes well and I can get out next weekend. |
