Post subject:  Heat for buggy?

I did a search for this and couldn't get anything but a page of numbers and letters that all run together! Even though winter is almost over --- i am looking for some other ideas for heat in my buggy! It being an air cooled VW is the reason to post in this section. I run fully enclosed body with doors, and want family to be a little more comfortable during the really cold rides. [below freezing] wuss  I used a bilge blower from a boat to take hot air from under heads of eng and didn't get enough- tryed making a exhaust heater like a bug would have and it got some better. Any ideas would be great --I have six months till we get to needing the heat!!!!!!!!!! Thanks everyone for your help!!! Mark

Why not just use some regular heat exchangers like the stock style? I heard that there is a company making them with a larger exhaust tube in them for performance applications. I have never looked into this but maybe you can find some information on these somewhere?

Why cant you take your rad, oops "oil cooler" and use it to heat your cab with a slower fan. You may have to restrict some of air going in the normal fan to build a little more engine heat. I dont know how much heat it would make. If its mounted in the right place you could reverse it to push air in the cab in the winter and oposit in the summer

Insulated coveralls

I have seen some guys use their oil cooler fan also.

I have thought aboout the oil cooler as a heat sorce but didn't know how much it would provide. Might could do the 'j'tubes and oil cooler combo. I do have a large oil cooler/fan I got from Moores Parts that I am running now. It would be fairly easy to build ducts from cooler to inside?
As for the coveralls--- I get so many layers on I can't drive! [wuss]

Here in Alabama when we rode bajas in the winter we all had gas heaters from things or busses. They work the best.I have also seen them in a few enclosed rails. Their was at one time a company in Hot VW's remanufacturing them called JB's Heater service. Nothing you can come up with will work as good as these.I have tried almost everything their is.From sterno cans to blower motors to coverall's. We croosed a lot of deep creeks here in the winter so we needed some real heat.

I have heard of guys routing a tube into the buggy and back out. Then run the exhaust thru it.

One thing I do is I use the HOT HANDS, I put one in each pocket. (They are the things you can buy at Wally world in the sporting goods section, that you take out of the pack and shake up, and then they get warm) They seam to help a lot. Also use insulated rain suits or un-insinuated is what I use and wear very few clothes under them and stay very warm and dry. The rain suits seam to be warmer than coveralls.

I have seen the guys I ride with take a bilge pump and hoses from the motor pulling the hot air in and pumping it up to the driver and passenger. Theres enough heat off the motor to keep you warm.

Have thought about all of these ideas. Have not decided on what will work best.
Last year I wrapped one header tube w/ perferated sheetmetal strips that were 2" wided [three wraps each- total of 5 sections. Inserted a 12volt heating element from rv fridge into sheet wraps and covered w/ alum sheet-connected 3" hose w/ bilge blower and ran duct to windshield. Worked good except drain on charging system-I couldnt run lights while running heat.
Thanks for all your answers and ideas---keep them coming . We may come up with the ultimate heat for buggies.

I had a single seater with body panels on it. The oil cooler was mounted near the floor board beside the seat. In the winter, I would reverse the leeds on the fan and it kept me comfortable with 2 layers of regular clothes in below freezing temps.

In my w/c it is mostly the same. Only difference is the radiator puts off so much heat that you can ride in shorts and t-shirt in below freezing weather.

I tried bilge blower on last buggy but didnt get much heat from it,even wrapped w/ insulation and alum tape. I think the open skid plate was the problem. Also when we did water crossing there was always steam being forces into cab along with some burning mud smells. I may try it again thou>
