A friend of mine just rebuilt his 2276 new mains new rod and cam bearins when u first start her up it has between 40&50 psi oil but you can drive it down the road and back just long enough to get her up to runnin temp the oil press drops to about 10 to15 psi i even streched the oil pressure spring it helped a little but i think that is awful low (at idle) but it does shoot back up to about 50 if you rev it up a little what should we do???????????

Its not uncommon to have 10 to 15 PSI at Idel at running temp. Typically you should see aproximatley 10 PSI per 1000 RPM. |

Well it just worried us cause b-4 i streched the spring it was more like 8-psi is that still normal??

mine does that. it will drop to 10-12 around idle (1100rpm). then soon as you hit throttle it goes to 40-50. i was told it was normal. i have the HD oil pump to. kyle |

Castrol GTX 10w-40 is the kind of oil you wanna run though. |

Stretching the spring(s) will do NOTHING for you after the engine is warmed up. It will increase cold temp pressure (and blow filters, coolers and hoses), but the relief valves are not opening at idle after the engine is warm. Pressure is then measured by leakage in the bearings, case, oil pump, etc. I run 10w40 Castrol and have never had a problem. Sure, the pressure gets low (mine runs about 15-20) at idle, but as long as the light is not coming on, (most are around 5-7 psi) I would not worry about it. The engine does not need a lot of pressure at idle. |

Well i didnt strech the relief spring just the oil press spring by the fly wheel i was hopeing that it would still let the cold press bypass and not blow any lines cause i noticed that you can buy booster spring kits so i just made my own do you think this will still be a problem?????????

Acceptable stock oil pressure is 3 psi, thats when the light flickers with a stock sender, according to the guy I used to work for that owned a VW repair shop for 20+ years and was the service manager at a VW dealership before that. Dont sweat it, your fine. Larry |

I just ran into that same problem and everyone said it was just fine run it. I did and lost a scat crank in the deal. If you you feel like there is a problem tear it down and check it out. Mine blew up one the first ride after about 45 minutes of riding. Mine would hold 75 psi at idle and after about 15 minutes drop to about 15 psi. |

Sounds like you may have had bigger problem KFondren. I too get rather paranoid about oil pressure. But I will say that if Roy and Eric are among the group saying not to worry. I wouldn'y worry. My 2 cents Dean |
