Has anybody used EMPI stroker cranks and H beam rods?I'm going to build a 2332 or 2387 and want to save money and have good quality parts.Scat is great stuff, but almost triple the cost.If anyone has any ideas on a place to get quality parts and a fair price please let me know. |

Where would be a good place to buy that type of crank? |

CB Performance makes very good cranks, make sure you get the 4340 chromoly crank, also the H-beam rods are 4340 chromoly too. The rods run at $250 and the crank runs at $290 and about $50 to have it shipped from California. |

Either Bugpack, EMPI, and CB are all good cranks. They are all new chromoly forged cranks. The cranks from DPR, that bruce 1 mentioned, are also good cranks. The DPR cranks are a stock VW crank that has been stroked by welding material on the outside, then regrinding into a larger stroke. If you are building a 2387, I don't think EMPI has a crank that large. Bugpack, CB, and DPR do though. Also like bruce 1 mentioned, if you are building something that big, go with an H-Beam Rod. I would get the rods from either Bugpack, EMPI, or CB with the 5/16 rod bolts. You could use a set from Scat with the 3/8 bolts, but you will have to really hack the cam to get the assembly to clear. Jim's Custom VW's has the EMPI stroker cranks for around $280, and the EMPI H-Beam rods for around $200. Give him a call at 1-800-621-3503. I will be using an EMPI 84 crank with EMPI H-Beam rod set in my new 2332 build. |

Make sure the rod bolts are ARP 2000. |

For what its worth, It is my understanding that just about all aftermarket cranks are made in the same place "China". Weather it be CB, EMPI, Scatt lower end units etc. |

Turboblue, thanks for the advice. I got the rods a while ago when they first came out, and they had EMPI's HD rod bolts that were good to 180,000 PSI. After speaking with some high end engine builders, they convinced me get some ARP 2000 Bolts to replace them. EMPI now supplies ARP 2000 bolts in thier H-Beam Rods. I'm pretty sure Scats Volksracer Cranks are made in China. The only Scat Cranks in thier catalog that say "made in the US" are thier Pro-Comp, and Flanged Cranks. If this is the case, an American made Scat Crank starts around $750. They are excellent cranks, but unless your building a 15 to 1 Nitrous Engine, or a 30+PSI Boosted Turbo Engine, I think they are a little overkill IMO. Scats Volksracer Cranks are good cranks also. The others from CB, Bugpack, EMPI, and DPR, are of equal quality, and usually fairly less expensive than Scat's. |

I'l probably go with Cb crank and rods.I used their stuff before and had no problems.I basically was looking for same quality for a lesser price. But i beleive you get what you pay for too. |
