Friend of mine and I were talking this weekend about building a trail riding motor something to just ride with and thinking about 88 pistons with a 78 crank.
Sounds like a good torque motor and having enough HPs to ride and play some. What do you guys think about this for a buggy motor.

1897 sounds like a good turbo motor.

Are you thinking of using the 88mm pistons & cylinders that machine in, or slip in? The slip in 88's have a really thin cylinder wall and, although I haven't personally seen this, I have heard stories of the cylinders warping over time. Reguardless of which 88's you use, I don't think either are available in a "stroker" piston with a different wrist pin height. A 78 stroke crank isn't that much larger than a stock crank, but you may have to clearence the skirts of the pistons to clear the counterweights of the crank. If you want to use slip ins, I would stay with an 87mm cylinder set, and do the clearencing if needed. The 87's are more durable than the 88's even though they are only 1 mm smaller. If you are going to use a machine in cylinder set I would get either the 90's or 94's in the stroker wrist pin height.

Thanks, it was something that we got to kicking around the idea of it. Thanks for pointing out the piston pin location, that will be a dillema to work out.

vwtravis, Why do you say a 1897 would be a good turbo motor?

Small motor with use of a TE04H turbo from junk yard ($100.00) it would make a low buck motor with good power as long as you limit the boost on the 88s. And everyone has a set of 88s laying around well almost a complete set.
