So, i've been in search of a case, and thanks to dean and his brother they came up with a stock case, but he referred to it as being a "big stud case." Niether of us were really sure how much bigger they are and I was curious as to if any of you guys know if Mofoco .041 heads and Mahle 87mm pistons will mate up to this case? Thanks in advance!

I believe that by big stud is refering to the head studs that come out of the side of the block to hold the heads on. They are 10mm and the small studs are 8mm. The 8mm use what they call case savers which are similar to helicoils (spelling?). They insert into the larger stud holes to use the smaller studs. The smaller studs are suppose to be stronger, and to machine the block for 94mm cylinders they must have the case savers. The heads and 87mm cylinders will work fine with a stock case.

Hey Jeff,

You are good to go with those combination of parts.

Depends on which big stud case.
H5xxxx and B5xxxx are notorious for pulling head studs.
AE big stud cases are OK for a 1641.
Just a little FYI...........

Very true. You might want to look at your case and make sure the serial number begins with two letters. If not, you may want to take it easy on the motor and keep the CR down.
Your orig question, will they mate up?, yes everything will bolt together.

Usually the only time you will have a problem with a single letter case is if the case has been overheated in the past. I have ran them with good and bad luck.

Can you even bore a big stud case out for say 94's? I know mine with the 8mm's have the studs right next to the bore of the case.

I have never tried it. Did not want to ever spend the money to chance it.

I'm building a new engine with a new Bug Pac high roof block and it is bored out for 94's and it has 10mm studs. You just have to clearance the cylinders a little bit. You can torque the 10mm studs more than the 8mm,so less chance of a problem.

I've been told the new blocks with 10mm studs are great! And 94's fit right in them, with not much more cutting into the case savers than the old 8mm blocks.

Those Bug Pac blocks are nice. The only problem i had was once i got the jugs and head on one side, the engine wouldn't turn over. The bottom of the piston was hiting opposite rod cap.So i had to take it back apart and clearance the pistons.I should have went with a longer rod,but i got the 5.5's with a 86 crank.

You can bore a 10mm stud block for 94's as long as the case savers are in there but you can't do it if the block is 8mm studs and already cut to 94's.10mm studs are the way to go for any kind of compression or in a boosted engine.
