Post subject:  Battery, Crank sensor
Hi guys, I am new to buggys. I have read every post on this forum at least twice. This is my first post and my first buggy build. I have a couple of questions........Where we ride at there are a couple of river crossings. 1.Should I mount the battery higher on the frame? What if the battery becomes submerged for a short period of time? I will be running a GM 3800 V-6 with the computer and all the sensors ( the computer will be mounted in the roof of the driver compartment). This question is for the W/C (Subie) guys......2.Will submersion/ Mud hurt the crank/ cam sensor. If so how do you water proof it? Now you A/C guys be nice. I love your buggys and know that I will never climb like you. I have seen some really awesome videos. Nearly unbelievable. Thanks for any help, Tom :D

HI,,, welcome to the Woodsbuggy community. I run a Subaru ej22. I put all my relays, computer, and any loose components in an ammo box and sealed the harness entry point. The sensors are pretty much sealed from the factory. I have not submerged this engine but have rode in hard rain several times with no problems. After each ride, I usually stop at the carwash and give it a good going over. I have my battery mounted on floor level as do most others. My buggy is water friendly. :P

Thanks a whole heap. Ammo Box HMMMM.......I have a couple of those laying around. That is exactly what I wanted to know. I really enjoy watching everybody's videos.I am amazed at some of the stuff you guys do. I hope my buggy turns out to be half the buggy as some of your alls. Thanks again Tom

Crank sensors are usually magnetic pickup style, so there should not be a problem with that. But totaly submersing the battery is another story that I can't answer.

ammo boxes for sure!!.... i use 2....1 for cpu and 1 for relays/fuses :)

Submerging the battery for short periods of time will not hurt a thing.

Seal all connections with di- electric grease and they will be fine

the thing to remember about a batt is that the top of it needs to stay clean . If dirt accumulates on top of a batt along with water ---- will cause a draw across the posts ---water that is clean will not cause this to happen.So clean post area after riding.

Bruce, Since this is my first buggy and my first attempt at building one I'll have to pass right now. Maybe after I get a little seat time, and if the buggy performs like I want it to, then yes I would love to. We will just have to see.There are several buggy's around these parts but they never get together and ride. I hope to change all of that. There is alot of good riding around here. I will probably have some sort of cover for the top of the battery, it just won't be water proof. Tom :D
